I don't know why you're continuing with this. I am a good waiter/bartender, I like my job, I make pretty good money, and I also think people who tip $.50 or under 15% are cheapskates. I don't tell them that to their faces, I think it, and I post about it anonymously on internet forums. What exactly is your problem with all of this?

ludicrous hypocrisy imo

I know I tip way above the norm but I would never tip .50 for a beer. Nothing against those who do but I'd just feel weird leavin some hottie with nice tits change. Now if it was some dude with a goatee and glasses, I'd probably be walkin around jinglin.

Re: Wtf Cheap People

Just to clarify this thing with tipping for a beer in the US...because something like that here in the UK isn't even considered.

Are we talking about being sat at a table and a bartender bringing a drink to you? If so, that's understandable. Or are we saying, walk into a busy bar, wait for five minutes to get served, order your drink ...bartender turns 180 degrees pulls a bottle out of the fridge, opens it and places it on the bar for you? You want a tip for that? gtfo. A pint here in the UK is around 3 ($6) these days and prices rising all the time. A tip for an operation that lasts less than 30 seconds and is your 'job'?

Re: Wtf Cheap People

I'd rather spend $30 more on a dinner than a room - but that's because my Vegas schedule has me spending the bare minimum of time in the room.

In terms of ATM fees - I worked for a small company who was one of the first to bring the non-denominational (?) ATM's into this province. One of the funniest/saddest sights was an ATM we had installed in a strip club - even though the fee was $20, you would see the receipts of people withdrawing $20 or $40 at a time.

Great post Henry. I preach this all the time. The first trip I took to Vegas, none of my friends could afford to go. I ended up paying for my buddies hotel/airfare so Id have someone to go with. You cant take it with you, so spend it while you can. Words to live by imo.

I fully understand the need for a budget but all budgets should have some room. If a budget is so tight that $15 extra a day matters then frivolous things like travel to Vegas should be reconsidered.

Also the location argument fails because when the room split became $130 for OP and $70 for friend he was fine with MGM.
the thing is though, that staying in a nicer room is completely unnecessary - especially considering how little time you will stay in there. Sure, even if it is insignificant to the budget, there's not a whole lot to gain from staying at the nicer place and regardless of how insignificant it is in the grand scheme of the trip, it still probably represents at least an hour of work for someone that's bitching about it.

Maybe you have to wait 5 minutes because they aren't getting tipped and have no incentive to work faster

$30 might be worth not having to wait for the IP elevators, though.

That isn't true. I have never stayed at either MGM or IP but I travel a lot and have stayed at hotels covering the entire price range. Cheap hotels are disgusting. You still have to take a shower every day. A nicer bathroom that is not gross is very important. Better bedding. A better bed in most cases. Staff that threats you better. Not to mention just the feeling. You walk though a hotel that is fresh, taken care of, clean carpets, etc you feel good about yourself. You walk though a cheap hotel and it is just depressing.

Also your fellow guests are just different. Less children alone makes staying at an upmarket hotel worth the extra money.

there is this wing place near me where you can order and pay online with a CC, delivery tip included. one time the delivery guy yelled at me (well, he didn't yell at me, he actually told me very nicely) bc I prepaid his tip with a CC, and now he was going to be taxed on the $3 or whatever.

meh, eh I tip in cash now even though it's easier to just pay for the whole thing with a cc.

Other restaurant stuff--Chips and salsa at my restaurant are three dollars. It is a very regular occurrence that people will sit at a table and order chips and salsa, then quickly ask if they're complimentary. When they find out that they're not, these people look very disappointed, hem and haw for thirty seconds and then say, no, forget it. Again, Wtf?
This is understandable. Chips and salsa are almost always complimentary so their disappointment should not be unexpected.

I agree with you about the rest, but not the 50 cent tip. I don't think it's b/c they are cheap necessarily, but they probably deserve that extra 50 cents more than you do. All you did was pour a drink, something a well-trained chimp could do.

I used to want to stay at Casino Royale when I went to Vegas. then my senses came over me. I don't think it's worth spending $400 to stay at Bellagio vs $150 at Monte Carlo or whatever, but I'll definitely spend something more.

ps I only read page 4 of this thread

How is "not getting fired" for incentive?

How is this self-defeating? These are the middle-class people who end up as millionaires when they retire.

Re: Wtf Cheap People

my friend and I both got comped 3 nights at the venetian for a weekend this summer. We booked the rooms and our flights (which are about $270 round trip post-tax), and yet a lot of our friends dont want to go because its "too expensive". I guess they dont realize that when they actually want to plan a trip to vegas, theyll have to stay at the IP because they cant afford the $300 night suites at the venetian. Kind of annoying to have to convince them that its a deal of a lifetime for them, but most cheap people think of it as saving money by not going on this trip, instead of "wow free suites at the venetian! i should get my vegas trip out of the way now instead of later!" /shrug

Of course, anyone in that situation shouldn't be eating at a restaurant in the first place... but that doesn't stop most people.

He may also just be trying to get a better deal. If the 5 minutes in question (if it was nearly that long, which I doubt) saves him $1 on average, that's $12 an hour. Personally, $12 an hour for random BS like this would be worth it to me as long as I was making ~$20 or less at my actual job.
