I don't think I'd put MS and AL as the absolute worst states. The worst would be anywhere that it ridiculously cold in the winter and hot and humid in the summer. Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska or something. Every state must have some cities or towns that aren't awful, but you can't escape the weather and the deep south, the west or New England have one harsh season max.

Most would likely be in the midwest like Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, the Dakotas, etc. I'm not sure I can think of 25 states with worse cities. I figure some states in the South like Mississippi and Alabama kind of suck but at least with Bama you can pick Gulf Shores.
Iowa and Nebraska are quite nice, no where near the awfulness of Ohio. Ohio is a bottom 10 draw, maybe bottom 5.

Got Arkansas on the random spin. Doesn't seem as bad as I initially thought. I'd take it over Ohio.

Got Delaware. Seems like an incredibly awful pull right?

I grew up in Oklahoma and now live in Texas. Most Texans do hate Oklahoma. There are lots of ****ty parts of Oklahoma, Tulsa and OKC are both plenty liveable, with low cost of living, legal gambling, and generally very friendly people. Norman and Stillwater are fine college towns, with all that entails. Anywhere else in Oklahoma is nope.

There are places where the weather is fairly moderate, like Reno or Sparks.

I didn't vote in the pole. There are at least 40 states I wouldn't like, so I'd be screwed either way.

On the off chance it exists and anyone here has been there, how does Montana rate?

Depends on how cold you like your six-month winter.

Yes. Your only real options there are Wilmington (decent/growing young professional population and food scene, but mostly very ****ty) or the beach areas in the south (awful mix of rich ****head retirees and rednecks)

my bottom 5 have to be

missisippi, alabama, ohio, kansas, Michigan (Ive never been to UP tho, so maybe its not bad?).

With Hawaii being a wild card, because I could see it potentially being the worst, since you are so isolated and its expensive, but it also could be super amazing.

Sans Austin, Texas would def be bottom 5 as well

The difference is that Ohio, Missouri and Kansas have metro areas >2mil that include crime-ridden areas but otherwise offer amenities that you expect to find in a first world country. If you live in Birmingham, AL you have to “roll tide” because that is the only success story in driving distance and in Jackson, MS you are happy if your sewer system works.

Montana is real, and it's spectacular. Some of the best skies I've ever seen.

It's expensive, but the amazingness of it more than makes up for that. DYE poke, bro? Kauai confirmed GOAT

If you have a negative perception of Michigan the UP isn’t going to change it.

I spun and got Rhode Island. Meh. Still way better than Ohio.

This is the right answer. If the state pick is really random, you should probably pick Ohio. Keep in mind you need a job and all that. Ohio has a bunch of big cities, a large population, a million Universities etc.

If the pick was weighted by population then by all means take a shot at the big wheel.

Moved to the southern beach area, and you aren't too far off with the assessment of the people. Beach life makes up for it though, and I'm running +EV with the people I've run into so far.

will take over NoVA any day of the week

There are only 5 states that have no cities with over 100K people in them. Otherwise the biggest city in practically any state is going to be preferable to living in Cleveland or Cinci

I'd definitely spin the wheel.
I think WV is getting under-rated, it isn't ideal but it has some of the best outdoor stuff for the east coast, it's 90 minutes to DC, and they have poker.

I'd be interested to see heatmaps from well-traveled people, like this:

Spun and got South Dakota - but tbh I'd probably pick to stay in Ohio. At least it's not North Dakota.
