Social media + 24 hour news cycle + smartphones in everyone's hands to record video = appearance of bad stuff happening more often and seeming all the worse when it does

Plus, in many cases those who are seeing things as all the worse now were just previously trapped in blissful ignorance.

my actual view is syncretic. On the one hand, the world is generally a better place than it was thirty or fifty or a hundred years ago. But it is also more complex, interconnected, and likely to be less stable -- apocalypse is more likely now, and I don't mean some theoretical, roko's basilisk kind of thing, but a real nuclear or biological disaster.

I don't know if it's a media push lately (I'm in Aus) but I've honestly felt like every other day there's something kicking off.

I don't feel unsafe at all, but I genuinely think that it's getting so frequent that we will start to see all of this **** as everyday life.

It is definitely worrying.

I think the people saying it's just social media are deluding themselves a bit. 9/11 created a pretty global shift and we're seeing the evolution of it. Arab Spring, a renewed cold war starting, Chinese starting to flex their muscle... You don't have to look much past defense spending right now and the return of mandatory military service in a lot of countries to see the seeds of worry. Add climate change on top and it's a lot.

The folks behind the Doomsday clock don't really move the needle for fun. The 90's were a period with the clock where the world was doing way better. Since then it's only gotten worse for them: http://thebulletin.org/timeline

I think we're on a bit of a downswing in the past 15 years. The Middle East is the region which has suffered the most due to that area's turmoil. But, it has spilled out to the West and threatens to get worse.

The last quarter of the 20th century was damn good for the West.

However, recency bias is coming into play. Just compare a couple major cities, Berlin and Tokyo, to what they used to look like. This wasn't so long ago.

Let's wait to see how many medals Michael Phelps wins before we decide that, but I think we can safely add Brazilian corruption to the list.

Russia is such a great country in so many ways, but the politics have been ****ed up for at least the last two hundred years. I don't know which was worse, stupid entitled czars or communist thugs. Physics and chess, though. Borscht is not good, but isn't IMO a sign of the impending apocalypse.
