Basically looking for some good detailed online assistance in learning more about wine... everything from grapes, regions, food association, etc...

Also if any of the chefs out there have some links to restaurant trends (plates, silver ware, presentation) it would be greatly appreciated.

I don't work in the industry or anything, I'm just a simple oenophile.

For free online stuff, I'd recommend the Usenet group alt.food.wine. As with anything Usenet, you'll need to either ask specific questions or spend some time searching the archives.

If you are really wanting to learn, I'd recommend reading a book on the subject. I bought "The Cook's Encyclopedia of Wine", and it was extremely good. Sure, you shell out $20 or so, but it's more than worth it for the money you'll save buying mediocre or overpriced bottles of wine.

You can read all you want, but nothing beats tasting wine at the same time as you are learning about what it is you are tasting. Reading about "cigar box notes" won't mean much to you until you drink a bordeaux and realize that is exactly what you are smelling/tasting.

Wine stores often have tastings, which are a good way to learn.

I've never taken any of their courses but the Wine Spectator is suppose to be good. http://www.winespectator.com/Wine/Home/

http://www.nataliemaclean.com/index.asp I enjoy getting Natalie's newsletter. It use to be free but she recently changed to a pay format.

if you live in an area w/ vinyards just go tasting. there is no better way. wine dudes love to talk. you can only learn a little at a time anyway. without tasting moverdres from bandol or zins from paso or pinos from oregon you really cant "learn" anything because you have no solid comparison points.

If you're a total beginner check out the show "Oz and James' Big Wine adventure". It's available online and the premise is basically wine critic Oz Clarke teaching James May everything about wine while touring around France. Very entertaining IMO
