a) William and Mary does sound like a silly name. Like really. I dunno why, but it's the combination of both those names. William and John wouldn't sound just as bad.
b) I've never heard someone say "I have a [insert university] degree". That sounds very strange to me.
c) Never heard of William and Mary before.
d) The name of the college held no relevance to the story.
Considering these 4 points, it's not hard to realise that some people are going to assume it's a joke name. Under these circumstances it just doesn't make much sense that he's referring to an actual college. Saying you should know due to the placement of "William and Mary" is also useless, since I've never heard people refer to their college+degree like that. Of course, if I really wanted to know what he meant, I'd have just googled it.
But I'm a eurotard so yeah. Seriously though, I don't get why people are so stubborn over this. Americans who think the world revolves around America?
