Please explain because I didn't seriously think Bacon and Eggs was the name of any kind of team, and if you told me a team was playing in the Super Bowl, and that this team was "_______ FC" I wouldn't actually think they were a soccer team. I'd just think you were British and laugh on the inside.

What's with people putting the name of their college before "diploma" anyway? Is this an American thing? I would never say I have a "[insert university here] degree". Perhaps if I went to some really swanky university like Cambridge it'd be useful, since it distinguishes that it's a great degree. But in that case, you're a tool for bragging.

If I was ever specifying what university I got my degree from I'd always say "I have a degree from [insert unversity]".

Especially in the context of the story, I don't see why this detail was added anyway. It's his diploma hanging on the wall. What college he got it from is irrelevant.

So given that
a) I never hear anybody specify their degree like that
b) Never heard of the college
c) College name sounds dumb, or like a joke.
d) It's irrelevant and strange to include the college name in the story

I'd probably just assume he was making some kind of joke about his diploma. Asking is hardly terrible. If you're on the internet you'd just google though.

A degree from William and Mary is pretty prestigious. It's up there with Harvard and any of the Ivies.

because people were basically implying earlier that once you have a contextual clue you can take that clue as fact and then take whatever the rest is in whatever way that it would normally be used.

eg. XXXXX diploma = necessarily a diploma from XXXXX school.
XXXXX is in the superbowl = necessarily a team called XXXXX is in the superbowl.

it isnt black and white.

there is obviously a limit to how far the information can be taken.

bacon and eggs is clearly not an nfl team. the mile high club is clearly not a club. something like king james diploma is almost certainly a diploma from a school called king james.

the only question is which side of the line 'william and mary' falls on.

Take this to SMP and let everyone else get on with this thread. I'm sure they'd love to talk ad nauseum about ambiguity as it relates to proper names.

The part where an overwhelming majority of people are laughing and you- yet you cling to the few people dumb enough to agree with you is pretty amusing.

While some of the eurotards might have an excuse, if you're an American, I'm going to think it's reasonable to expect you to have heard of William and Mary, or at a minimum be aware enough that there's plenty of universities with names like that that it's not shocking and the context clues should be all you know.

This. But asking twice is ****ing ridiculous.

Also, I thought the original story was stupid anyway. I can fully understand where someone would ask what funny language something is written in if they were reading a document written in script Latin, upside-down.

im just responding to trolls. im happy to let the thread get back on track but im not going to sit back and let ******s attack me.

keep in mind that this is all over a simple question i asked three years ago. the thread was then bumped today, three years after the op by someone just posting to defend my position. after that another complete ****** decides to take a shot at me. again for a post i made three years ago. and now the thread is just filled with morons taking potshots.

you cant seriously be accusing me of being the one keeping this going.

Latin is commonplace enough that if you can't recognize it, even upside down, it's very fair to call you stupid.

So many words on such a dumb topic.

Aside from a couple of words or a random phrase I rarely see Latin. I'd assume someone who can't recognize Latin just isn't exposed to large portions of Latin very much. Upside down it just looks like any random foreign language.

OOT elitists ITT. "OMGS YOU DON'T KNOW SOMETHING, YOU'RE SO DUUUUUUUMB!" *waddles around in obese glory*
09-19-2010 , 07:37 PM
By noticing the diploma, couldn't she also see that "William and Mary" was upside down as well...It really shouldn't be that hard to tell it's Latin
09-19-2010 , 07:39 PM
live in the US on the west coast
don't watch sports
never heard of william & mary
assumed it was a school based on the word DIPLOMA and talk of snobby latin

BulletproofMonk--Great troll, or greatest troll?

Huzzah!

Go for you. To let some random jerkoff sully the good name of Bulletproof Monk would be nothing short of a tragedy.

Can you imagine the years of public mockery if you were to leave this thread right now? Every time you posted, people would think, "There goes that poor soul who shamefully left the William and Mary debate. I wonder if he cries himself to sleep at night."

You CAN'T let that happen. Too much is at stake. Just keep on replying until everyone who disagrees with you admits that they were wrong. I'm sure that the end of the argument isn't too far off, so just keep fighting.

You can do it! I believe in you! Never surrender!

I don't think I'd ever criticize someone for not recognizing Latin. I mean most people probably would, but I wouldn't be totally shocked if someone didn't, nor would I call them dumb. But then again, it is on a diploma, which sorta gives it away.

People not knowing something that's reasonably common != dumb.

Although maybe you Amerotards are exposed to Latin all the time, in ways that I don't know about?

LOL epic thread here, i'm with BPM only b/c he is the man. I love how this argument spans 3 years.

The script on my diploma is damn near impossible to read which is a stylistic element and has nothing to do with the Latin aspect.

meh i feel like its just about over

we are now approaching that point where those who are stupid enough to not understand the legitimacy of my position are probably not intelligent enough to type a response.
