I still can't decide whether or not Bullet Proof Monk has managed to troll on the same topic for 3 full years or just simply won't let an argument die.

dude, you were told that William and Mary was like Harvard, and that it was something that gives diplomas, and you still kept asking what it was. Whatever you are in this thread, it's not right.

Bulletproof,

Dumb and stubborn is no way to go through life.

I wish Bulletproof would reply to one of the many, many people asking "why didnt you just use google since you were on the internet anyway."
09-20-2010 , 01:36 AM
this is the dumbest derail ive ever seen, was a pretty good thread too.
09-20-2010 , 01:59 AM
Perfect example of a good thread being wrecked by all these college name posts.

I'm a little surprised that more people dont get

Quote:
1. william and mary is some sort of slang for a type of diploma.
Is it so honestly hard to fathom that some one who wasnt familiar with william and mary would assume it was some joke they didnt get? If a college has a silly name its reasonable to assume that if used with the word "diploma" they may just mean a joke diploma. If someone said they had a Moe, Larry, and Curly Diploma my first thought wouldnt be "huh. I wonder what type of graduate program that college has."
09-20-2010 , 02:46 AM
No you have to be pretty ****ing stupid to think that.

William and Mary is not a silly name. There are dozens of colleges named after people. This is no stranger than Carnegie Mellon or Vanderbilt.
09-20-2010 , 02:47 AM
I am curious what Americans would assume a Desmond Degree is if i said i had one.

Assuming it is some kind of nickname for the level of degree isnt so weird given its an odd name for a university.
09-20-2010 , 02:47 AM
if instead of "Willliam and Mary" he had said "Mickey Mouse" would you have assumed it was college you hadnt heard of or that he was some how implying that the diploma was such a joke that hanging it in the bathroom was all the prestige it deserved?
09-20-2010 , 02:54 AM
I actually thought it may be some kind of honors diploma or a university in England named after the king and queen.

I had no idea with a college in the US (I did google it though before I read the response). But I also have a GED and didn't go to college so I never looked into choosing one. I basically know the well known Universities and Colleges.

Diploma over the toilet should have been from Nipissing imo.

lol americans thinking everyone is intimately familiar with the college system.
09-20-2010 , 05:17 AM
also tied up - the reason im not interacting with those talking about google is that people are just using it as a way out because they dont want to admit they were wrong.

ie.

'i dont know this'
'hey you're an idiot if you dont know this!'
'no, here are a list of valid reasons why i wouldnt know this.'
'oh.....'

*realising they were wrong but dont want to look dumb....*

'um, well you should have used google!'

im sort of interested in the american-centric angle. it could explain a lot actually. out of interest, how many of the people that are surprised at someone not knowing the college name could actually name 10 countries that arent america?
09-20-2010 , 05:44 AM
Do you know what a diploma is? No, you're an idiot. Yes, what kinds of institutions award diplomas? Know the answer? No, you're an idiot. Are you familiar with occam's razor? No, you're an idiot. Now if you've answered yes to all 3 of these questions, congratulations, you haven't yet proved yourself an idiot.

So when someone says xxx diploma, do you assume that this means:

A) A diploma given by an educational institution by the name of xxx

or

B) Some sort of esoteric joke?

Choose B and you're an idiot.

Now consider that this is a thread for making fun of stupid people. Is someone really stupid if they don't understand some esoteric joke? No. Clearly answering B is bordering on brain dead now.

Add in the fact that if you enter william and mary into google the first result is the university and I'm surprised you can type and breathe at the same time.
09-20-2010 , 05:52 AM
i cbf copy pasting the stuff that proves you incorrect. dont be so lazy and go back and read the thread.
09-20-2010 , 05:55 AM
btw, the answers are

yes
yes
yes
it depends on what 'xxx' is. for example if the name was literally 'xxx' then my answer would be b. are you actually implying your answer would be a?

out of interest, are you

a) dumb

or b) have no idea of the world outside of america?

im genuinely interested here.
09-20-2010 , 05:58 AM
btw im happy to go on owning ootiot ******s all day but if anyone is actually interested in getting the thread back on track they should probably just get over this.
09-20-2010 , 06:04 AM
meh, i'm probably OOT dumb for this, but i side with bulletproof.

when i first read it, i thought it could be some capt'n crunch diploma of sorts. with william and mary being some sort of christian brand cereal which incidentally would fit in with the crazy religious crowds you've got over there in the states.

other clues (or context) for that initial assumption was the OP mentioning it by name (which is weird indeed for non-americans), that it's hanging upside-down and over the toilet.

however, i then beat bullet by googling it expecting some funny imagery and found out that way that there is a solid chance of william and mary being a college after all.
