NO, I am nice. Heck, as I said before, even that waitress that forgot my husband's baked potato she didn't apologize. That's so mean. I couldn't fathom not apologizing. I even apologize to my server if I forget to ask for something even. That's how nice I am.

And so even though from your pov, you were reasonable and polite, I'm going to make the assumption that you might have actually come across ruder, more demanding, and in general a much larger pain in the ass than you realize.
I am not rude. What hurts my feelings to begin with is them being rude if they aren't writing the orders down. It hurts my feelings that it shows "I DON'T CARE IF I GET IT RIGHT" in my eyes. It really hurts my feelings that much. Once, I was EXTREMELY polite, said "Could you PLEASE possibly write my order down, because it's complicated." The waiter COMPLAINED to my face said "I haven't written an order in 12yrs" to my face. Was that really necessary? I mean if the customer asks for a request that isn't unreasonable such as writing your order down, how is that sooooo horrible to be rude or to act like you should deny them of it if you want their money?? We still(me more even), decided to leave 19%, but he would have had 25% if his attitude would have been better just said "Sure" when I asked him the question.
You don't get that servers don't want to do the work, they just don't. They want the tip, but don't want to do the work it takes to get the tip. They want free money without doing much and that hurts my feelings that they are so uncaring and unwilling to earn their pay. There are times where we have servers that have busted their butts for us, gave them over 30% tips even. It seems like there are more uncaring, unwilling to work servers than ones that are caring and willing to work as hard as they can.

And by the way, asking for refills to go is a move universally seen among lower class uncultured folk, who are more used to eating in fast food joints.
NOT TRUE since at restaurants before we were OFFERED refills to-go before. Ruby Tuesday once we were for example. Another place we have around here a local chain called "Walk-ons", they have offered us refills to-go. The SERVERS offered.
Also, WHY not get the most for your money? I mean that's more to give in the tip for the more work, why not want more money? The more my server does, the more I want to tip them if they were polite and got things right.

I would say 80% of them also left a 10% tip or less, and also displayed other signs that they don't understand restaurant etiquette and culture.
But why go by that when not everyone is like that?? So that other 20% wasn't like that, so why not go by that just MAYBE they will do the right thing to tip you well.
Also, you never said in that 80% did you give flawless, polite service?? If not, then HOW can you say it's because of that??? For example, asking for a refills to-go, but let's say you forgot the customer's side dish and didn't apologize, well WTF do you expect for a tip?? You can't seriously expect 20% when you didn't apologize even. Understand that that's only one part of the service and that doesn't mean they were cheap because they tipped you crappy(UNLESS YOU DID TRULY GIVE THEM 100% PERFECT SERVICE OR THEY EVEN TOLD YOU HOW GREAT YOU WERE and then you see their tip).

And LOL about complaining about service at an Applebee's.
Yeah, they want more money than the bill, so yeah, I expect them to work hard no matter WHERE you are. Denny's, Waffle House, IHOP even. Doesn't matter where. You want a tip, WORK HARD for it.
