This is very wise.

Howard,

What else do we have too many of? Too many ice cream flavors? Too many TV channels? Too many Kardashians?

Agreed. Spirals the best, then bowtie and elbow in the middle, with shells bringing up the rear in this foursome.

First off, you're wrong, spirals and cheese is great. But I thought you said they all taste the same, so how could it be a horror?

100% agree with that. Bucatini is great.

Kardashians for sure.

Regarding TV: When I was a teen (just after electricity was invented) we had 7 channels and there was always something to watch. Now I've got 2344098577321 channels and there's nothing to watch. What the heck?

And I'd bet the standard banana split ordered at Denny's has a vanilla/chocolate/strawberry combo. Go try and order grape ice cream and see what happens to you.

@El D: You don't find 'spiral pasta and cheese' in the frozen food section for a reason.

I thought they would both taste pretty metallic, especially the outside.

‘Spiral pasta’ = Rotini?

I do agree to some extent that pasta selection is a bit ott. It's marketing genius though in certain ways as some people will have 6 different types of pasta in their pantry but insist none of them will do for what they have planned.

Welp, El D, there's a reason that you've got your own forum! Although, I've got to say, I feel bad for the kids whose parents willingly serve up such an abomination.

Dont think gnocchi can be considered pasta.

Bloody good question Howard.

Either way, people should care about themselves more. Macaroni cheese is horror.

Texture is a huge part of enjoying food, IMO maybe even more important than taste once you reach a baseline of tasting good enough. So not surprising there are tons of different textures of pasta.

Like all things Italian, it's its own thing.

If you called risotto a rice porridge, Italians would probably give you the finger.

I don't really feel the need to categorize gnocchi.

It does share more characteristics with a drop dumpling than pasta though. I don't count spaztle as pasta either.

The other reason I don't like the term potato pasta is that there are also ricotta gnocchi with no potato.

I like what is marketed as 'thin spaghetti'. Also angel hair. When twirling on the fork, these make a more manageable bite.

And wtf with all these sauces!

Interesting seeing bucatini getting love ITT...it's one of the few times I didn't think a pasta I hadn't had before was really "necessary". Had bucatini all'amatriciana in Vegas a few years ago and liked it a lot, but thought it could have been done with any robust noodle. Plus, when I tried to make it at home, I couldn't find them anywhere and don't have an extruder on my hand-crank pasta machine, so used fettucine and it was fine.

oT,

I don’t like it quite as much as bucatini, but sometimes it’s easier to find spaghettoni or “thick spaghetti” which is also really good.

As far as I'm concerned, there aren't enough types of pasta!

One of my favorites:

cavatelli, broccoli, and garlic:

1. Angel hair is too thin.

2. There's a pasta restaurant I go to occasionally that has a spicy hot tomato oil. They serve it with bread before your meal and I usually get it on my main course as well, it's that good. It's sold in stores but at a ridiculous 8 dollars per jar. A jar only has like 3 or 4 servings in it. I feel so conflicted on whether or not to buy it when I plan on making pasta.

3. Is a jar considered a jar if it's plastic? Is a jar just a cylindrical container? Is a screw on cap a requirement? Because there's Tupperware in cylindrical shapes but those have a locking lid and would not be considered jars.
