I can't imagine approaching 1,000 PMs.

Y'alls some behind-the-scenes MFers.

/olds rambling about the good old days

I learned to use a slide rule as well, which I called a "slipstick." Also the circular version. We had an abacus around our house and I played with that a good bit one summer and got fairly quick with it -- abaci (abacuses?) are pretty easy to use. I also read Trachtenberg's book on quick calculation and still remember some of its methods, although i've forgotten most of it.

I had a circular one as well--thin flimsy plastic IIRC. I had forgotten all about it. The engineering students referred to them as slipsticks which was about the extent of their sense of humor.

I received a nice abacus as a Christmas or b'day present as a kid, but I never tried to learn to use it. I'm totally lost on Trachtenberg--never heard of him.

i never learned how to use a slide rule, but when i was in 4th or 5th grade i did learn chisanbop. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chisanbop
it was taught to me in an advanced education class in school, not through some 'as sold on TV' course shilled by the aeronautical engineer father on My Three Sons.

Cool. I think about numbers in a very odd/obsessive way since I was a very young child. Numbers, counting, and math in general fascinates me. Many people don’t even realize that base 10 number system isn’t the only way to think about numbers. Then you get into really weird mathematical **** like ring theory. Fk i love it.

Good math history book:

I am pretty rusty at math now, which is basically what I spent much of the last half decade studying, but I really enjoy reading about it at an abstract level.

When people lose their **** about common core it makes me laugh hard. There’s not really a single correct way to think about numbers.
