Usually, at this time of year, I get a craving for eggnog, buy some and realize that I have to finish a quart by myself (if I buy the non-alcoholic). It always seems thicker than I remember it. I might get the alcohol-containing variety this year.

I'm just not feeling it this year, though. I may, however, buy some so I can show younger relatives that there are other ways to consume alcohol besides beer and wine.

So, who is planning to have some? Do you just drink it or do you like to eat something accompanying it?

Very much so. I've dipped into some spiced rum & eggnog drinks a couple times already this December, look forward to even more.

I've never really been a fan of it. Lots of people definitely love it though.

Maybe I'll give it a try again this year.

What I am wondering (and forgot to ask in the OP) is if anyone makes eggnog from scratch. I figure there are enough foodies in OOT that someone has to.

Yeah, I make it from scratch each year for my annual Christmas/New Year's party. I don't have the recipe in front of me, but it's the whole 9 yards -- "cooking" the egg yolks in booze overnight, blending in whipped cream and meringue, etc.

It's a pretty high-octane nog with about 2 1/2 cups of bourbon, 2 1/2 cups of dark rum and 1 1/2 cup of brandy to about a gallon of milk and cream. You can almost see the booze fumes rising from the top. I brought a big bowl of it to work once and one of the secretaries said it made the office smell like a gas station.

I have to dig out the recipe to make it this weekend, I'll post it when I do.

not for us, in the UK it's an uncommon i.e. never had it drink.

Would like to try, as mulled wine gets a tad dull.

I find that a 50/50 mix of nog and brandy takes care of the thickness problem and also makes talking to the family a bit more bearable.

I bought a pre-made eggnog that has no alcohol. What I plan to do is to make it frothier and less thick, by first running it through a cappuccino frothing machine. Then I will add brandy.

I find the standard eggnog too thick and sweet for my tastes.

So I'm at the store and see regular non-alcoholic eggnogg and then "mixer" eggnog that says just add booze.

Is there any difference between these two?

You can spruce up your Starbucks Eggnog latte with any quality liquor for a tasty buzz. The old doctored party eggnog isn't that popular anymore; gone along with mistletoe.

When I buy eggnog at the store, I usually cut it about half & half with milk. This thins it out and dulls the way too sweet flavor. I haven't made homemade egg nog in a few years. Every year I think I'm going to make it, but I never get to it.

I don't care to much for having booze in the nog. Seperate glass please.

I generally dislike it because of both the taste and the thickness, but it seems like chocolate-flavored egg nog might have potential. Anyone tried this?
