Who brings Christmas gifts in your family ?

It is obvious how the tradition started with kings bringing gifts for baby Jesus. However the tradition evolved in every country in its own way. In Russia gifts are brought by Ded Moroz (grandpa Frost) and Snegurochka (Schneemädchen).
Somewhere it is baby Jesus, Santa Claus, parents or may be no gifts at all.

How is it in your family?

I know a bunch of families where it is stated for children that it is Jesus, who brings gifts. I think the idea behind is to make children like Jesus more.

And I do understand how completely ridiculous it is from the norms and values of Christianity and how far from the bible story it is. But I think Christmas is not about logic, it is about how can I put as much as possible Joy and feeling of wonder and miracle out in the world. So as long as a story increases this feeling I am all for it.

I remember one year.... I was already a big girl... about 9 or 10. And I knew that there is no Ded Moroz. And I remember that I woke in the middle of the night and a Christmas tree was not there yet .... And then I didn't sleep.... Or at least I don't remember falling asleep again and in the morning the decorated Christmas tree was there. I logically understand that I must have fallen asleep and in this time my parents decorated the tree. But from the feeling..... I am so sure that they just couldn't have done it, because I was awake the whole time.

hmm.. I have Jesus who details my car and another Jesus who cuts my lawn already, but hiring yet another Jesus to do Christmas shopping for my kids might not be a bad idea

it apparently depends on the country and if it is catholic church if Jesus or someone else brings gifts.

I thought it had something to do with pagans bringing gifts to the sun god?

The thought of Jesus bringing someone a Playstation makes me kind of ill.

I'm not a Christian any more, but there are a lot of qualities to respect about Jesus. "Gives me cool stuff" is not one of those qualities.

Hey. Apparently you are right. Tx for the hint. I should read more Wikipedia

And a little more reading the interent (correspondingly the info should be taken with grain of salt) baby Jesus came into play as a gift giver in the time of Martin Luther (not Martin Luther King !), when he tried to break with catholic tradition of celebrating the Saints and especially the St. Nicolaus and tried to arrange the things so that children in his church would still get gifts and wouldn't feel excluded. Things evolved. And little Jesus as a gift giver entered the catholic church, where the protestants exchanged him mostly for the Santa Claus.

I find it fascinating that apparently only russians got a girl (Snegurochka) into play. I have to read-up when and how she entered the game.

Maybe because most other important Catholics are busy going Roy Moore on little boys?

Russians obviously realized that Ded Moroz would be blackout drunk all the time and unable to function without an assistant, might as well introduce a tall blonde with big boobs to make things more interesting

I remember, you had too some kind of russian connections. You are kind of right with Snegurochka.

She is comparatively young. First mentioned around 1860 in russian folklore. In today's role (granddaughter of Ded Moroz) she was introduced around 1937 and indeed the role was to make better connection to children. As first she was a little girl and not a young woman. The idea was that Ded Moroz is not so able to connect to children and a little girl would help.

The later development leads in kind of strange and weird areas, if we start to look at it more detailed. Snegurochka developed from little girl to an obviously sexualized being. I mean men are children, so it kind of makes sense. But then the pair Ded Moroz and Snegurochka are on one side kind of couple and on the other side grandfather and granddaughter.
