I’m surprised you didn’t go this route..

At 0:46 ... “Absolutely ma’am, I’d love to sign your baby.”

I've been collecting since I was a kid. Was in possession of a 52 Mantle for approximately 6 months when I was 10 years old, guy my aunt was dating "gave" me one and then took it back when they broke up. Had over 200 PSA10s that I sold at the peak in December, slowly going to start buying them back for a fraction of what I sold them for.

Bucket list items I plan on checking off this year:

33 Goudey Ruth SGC 2
51 Bowman Mantle SGC1
88 Donruss Gregg Jefferies PSA10 - don't laugh I never see this card for sale
90 Topps Frank Thomas - No Name on Front
90 Topps George Bush limited print

Market should crater around October in my opinion and will be at lower than pre-pandemic prices from what I am seeing.

$53 seems to get the job done

That is one of my favorite cards because it was probably the first card that was hyped up for me. I remember buying pack after pack trying to get that card, finally I saved up enough allowance to buy a box and I pulled 2 of them. Then he dudded.

Here's a funny cards story: Back in the early 90's my friend Trevor lived in a ground floor apartment with a guy (call him John) who was a fanatic card collector. He easily had 20 bankers boxes filled with cards, many of them seriously valuable. I can't remember them all, but he for sure had at least half a dozen Gretzky rookie cards and I'm pretty sure he had several other high profile rookie cards in baseball and hockey.

One weekend, John is away visiting his parents. Trevor comes home and turns on the TV and this totally random stranger walks out of John's room, carrying one of the banker's boxes.

So he sees Trevor on the couch they both just sort of look at each other.

And then the guy shrugs and says, "Damn fire alarms." Then proceeds to walk past Trevor and leave apartment through the sliding door.

It took Trevor like two minutes to process this, then he finally put two and two together and realized the guy was a thief! So he runs to the window but the guy is long gone. Turns out the box was full of some of the most valuable cards John had.

That incident didn't go over well.

My immediate response to any stranger in my home would be that of survival and it would get ugly very quickly for the thief. Trevor must have been one very laid back guy!

I think it was more that he just didn't realize what was happening. And the fire alarm line was pretty random, who even says something like that?

The trick is if you can get a PSA/BGS 10 on a card where few or ideally, no other PSA/BGS 10's exist, even a junk card can be worth way more than it should be because you can set the price/control the market for it. You're essentially creating a 1 of 1

You can call me a cynic if you want but I've heard things over the years about the grading companies that they grade their own cards the best while giving lower grades to customers' cards.

Thoughts?

Look no further than 4 Sharp Corners. Somehow they always get a 10. There are only 2 reasons that I grade.

1) For PSA I think the cards present pretty well, and if I am buying a graded modern card, I might as well try to get a pristine 10.

2) Any card pre 1970, I am going with SGC because I think those vintage cards present best on the SGC background, and plus I want to ensure the card is real.

Other than that, I think grading is essentially worthless. It's akin to the junk mortgages, finding a way to make worthless cards valuable. Most collectors like myself, collect because we love it.

The card that sold in December had previously sold for $465,000 in 2016 and $94,000 in 2011.

Interesting that you're an MTG collector. I'm not sure how you're still finding arbitrage opportunities, but more power to you if you are.

I saw this coming, but even I'm shocked by the growth; and Magic has not yet surged in price nearly as much as sportscards and Pokemon. If the rumored Netflix MTG show comes to fruition, and/or if MTG has it's Logan Paul moment (paging Post Malone!), then prices will go to the moon.

The only problem is there's no more low hanging fruit. First I loaded up on gold and silver age sealed, but the Timmys caught wind of that. Then when I heard about TSR I went heavy on old-bordered foils, and now those have predictably exploded. Probably I'll need to look toward Four Horsemen NM commons and uncommons, as those can still be obtained for a decent price and seemingly still have lots of room to grow.

Got my first ever PSA order back yesterday (submitted in early October, before I had any idea wth I was doing)

Not great (nor anything worth heaps), but not terrible

2001 Topps Stars Albert Pujols RC - PSA 9

(I pulled from a pack in 2001, had it in same sleeve + toploader for 19 years, happy with it)

2000 Fleer Ultra Tom Brady RC - PSA 7

(I vaguely remember buying this raw from a dealer for $10-$20 in 2001, hoped it would be PSA 8 but oh well)

1985 Topps Roger Clemens RC (2) - both PSA 5

(Ouch - corners more dinged than I remember, centering not great on either, I think I pulled these from packs in 2000 in same sleeves + toploaders separately since, $10 cards now)

1984 Topps John Elway RC - PSA 4

(This one hurts - I bought raw from a dealer in a screwdown one-touch in 1997 for $50, worth maybe $20 now slabbed)

You're saying Magic has NOT exploded as much as Pokemon and sports cards? I dunno man. I guess maybe the difference is that there has always been a market for Magic and Pokemon cards, whereas the sports market crashed right around when CCGs where starting to take off.

I remember back in the early 2000s Wasteland(an uncommon from Tempest) spiked from 50 cents to five or six bucks. I had several friends who drafted frequently, but had stopped playing, so they all had 10-20ish of these lying around. I told them about the spike, and they all sold their Wastelands, glad to have made an extra $100 or so. Now they're $50. For a damn uncommon.

I think for Magic its A)Rarity is only one part of the price. The other part is driven by how good the card is, and there are now roughly a dozen formats a card might get played in.
B)Condition isn't as big of a factor. If you have a bunch of slightly played, even heavily played stuff, it still tends to retain 60+% of its value. C)You have both collectors AND players after cards. Yes, there's the guy who spend half a million on that 9.5 Alpha black lotus a while back, but there are also people willing to shell out a grand for that Geaa's Gradle for their EDH deck that they're just playing with friends.

I know a couple people who are buying/selling cards, but in general they have to buy collections in bulk and take the time to resell them.

Just had a big sports card show at pbkc last sunday, this kid walks in with like 6 cards and $400, bought sold and traded his way into $1,200 and a crapload of PSA10 NBA rookies. He was prolly 15 or so. Good for him!

Got it, I see what you’re saying.

My Gretzky is maybe worth $750 ungraded.

I grew up w Jordan and Gretzky, such a mistake that I don’t have better cards of them.

Yes, I'm saying they haven't exploded at that level. They rose in price, but nowhere near Pokemon. Exhibit A - when people were fighting in the aisles to buy new Pokemon product there was rows and rows of MTG stuff sitting on the shelves untouched. Yes, I realize that is new stuff; however, the old also didn't 10x+ like some Pokemon and sportscards did.

Bumping and old thread bc I started buying baseball card sets. The one thing about solo cards that blows my mind is the difference in price between a graded card, a PSA 9 vs a PSA 10. Looked at 1983 Wade Boggs rookie in a PSA 9 is about $100, same card as a PSA 10 is $2k. The Fleer and Donruss are pretty close in price from a 9 and 10 though.
