This one has a special place in my heart -- I flew home to propose to my gf/now-fiancee (I was out of town for a few months), and my buddy who gave me a ride to the airport insisted that we head early and stop at a bar for a pre-celebration. This is the beer that I ended up ordering.

I may be biased due to sentimentalism but it was amazing, probably my favorite ever if I was forced into making a pick. Also was exactly the right amount of alcohol in 1 beer to take the edge off.

n00b question: how do you get it to the recommended temperature? Stick it in the fridge for like 45 minutes before you drink it? Or have I already screwed it up by having not refrigerated it upon purchase?

Anything from St Bernardus is fantastic, you are in for a treat.

You can store it at room temperature, that's no problem. Chill it to your desired coldness and enjoy!

at no point did i call bluemoon a hefe, i was simply saying if you like bluemoon most hefeweizens are far superior.

if you want to get really nitty the love by star hill is a german style hefeweizen and not a belgian
Ok, so I just thought you were unaware and wasn't trying to be a dick about it.

Witbier and Hefeweizen's are different styles from different regions and don't taste similar at all. Somebody may happen to like both styles (as I do), but many people like one style and not the other. Liking Blue Moon is no indication that a person will find any hefeweizen on the market superior. Maybe they don't like hefeweizen.

P.S. - I do agree Hoegarden is superior to Blue Moon, although Hoegarden seems to have slipped in quality since they were purchased by one of the big Euro brewing outfits.

Wasn't at all impressed with Hoegarden. Thought it tasted just like Miller Lite. Blue Moon certainly superior.

Did you get a draft or in the bottle...? Doesn't taste anything at all like Miller Lite, not even in the same ballpark. I suspect if you got a draft someone ****ed up. If it was a bottle you have some ****ed up taste buds!

But in case I was crazy I checked out a few reviews of each on Beer Advocate.

Miller Lite:

"Taste: faint malts and more cereal grains, over cooked corn and maybe one hop leaf drowning in a pool of seltzer water."

Hoegaarden:

"Taste - Strong flavor of coriander and orange peel.. along with some clove, wheat, and malts."

Store it in the fridge but let it warm up for 10 minutes or so after you pour. You could also experiment & pour it into two glasses, put one in the fridge while you let the other warm, and then taste the two side by side.

hefeweizen, is german style. witbier, is belgian style. the only more generic term i know of is wheat beer but that can mean any number of things including dunkle so i just call all the unfiltered white wheat beers hefe's

lol. i'm far from a fan of hoegaarden, but if it tasted like miller lite it most definitely wasn't hoegaarden.

Ok so maybe I was trolling a bit(not very well apparently), but in my opinion it's likely the taste is so tied to the effects that you can't be objective about how good it actually tastes in relation to other things. I'm a big craft beer drinker and kind of picky myself. Obviously the whole thing is silly and academic but I wonder what other people think.

I drink a lot from local breweries around here, and my local bar has a porter on tap right now from one called flat 12. I have never gotten into porter's up till now but it's great and I'd like to check out another. Anyone have suggestions for some of the best ones?

Two good commonly available porters are Anchor Porter and Sierra Nevada Porter. Two porters I like that are usually available in the Northeast (not sure if elsewhere though) are Geary's London Style Porter and Otter Creek Stovepipe Porter.

NTW,

Another relatively common porter is Deschutte Black Butte Porter. Have you had any/many stouts? Especially in craft beers, I find a lot of overlap between the two categories. I actually don't even know what the real difference is supposed to be. Time to do some Googling...

I guess I'll give Hoegaarden another try. It was a 6 pack of longnecks from a large, reputable local liquor store.

you in Indy? i haven't had the chance to try out anything from Flat 12 yet, but have heard good things. Its nice having a few craft breweries popping up around here lately with them and Sun King.

Only ever had 1 hoegaarden, thought it tastes like a wheat beer mixed with hot-dog water. Ugh. Maybe I got a bad one and should give it another try?

i think lighter colored beers have a shorter expiration date.

if they are improperly stored by allowing them to cool get worm and re-cool that can skunk the taste.

part of it is a little bit of skunky flavor is probably more noticeable on a hogarden than lets say an ale or porter

NtW, the key is where do you live? Rec's will have to be based on that because of distribution
