Newcastle is my old reliable.

Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Ale is really good, imo.
Winter seasonal beers I like the Great Lake Christmas Ale.

General question: Is a beer palette something that you guys have developed over time? Like, are most of the people touting the really expensive ones older guys?

I ask because since having extra cash on hand I have been trying tons of stuff from recommendations in this thread. My favorite beers are PBR, Blue Moon, and some of the more high abv-citrusy stuff. Really, all the american light beers are OK to me; I can barely tell a difference between natty, bud, and miller lite. The only beer I have ever considered bad is the flat warm stuff in England.

While the IPAs and stuff I have had recently aren't awful per se (harpoon and stone being the most recent) I just don't enjoy them as much as I enjoy my go-to beers. Is all hope lost or will I end up loving this if I keep drinking it?

well my palette definitely developed over the years, it took me a long time to come around to the IPA side and when I did now I pretty much only drink super hoppy IPAs and double IPAs. Try some "transition" IPAs like Sierra Nevada, Summit EPA, Surly Furious if you can handle the licorice, most of the odell's line like 5 barrel or IPA, stone IPA isn't too rough, etc. But there's a lot of crappy IPAs that jumped on the bandwagon that I can't stand at all. And if you like wheat beers there's a lot better than blue moon.

I've said this before and was flamed but there's just no reason at all to buy terrible american light lagers like miller light - they are literally all the same, a giant waste of money, and at 4.2% ABV make you piss all night. If you want to get drunk, buy some smirnoff and mix it with whatever. If you want a tasty beer try, well, anything else.

This reminds me of when I brought a six pack of Stone Ruination to a gathering of friends. Most stuck with some Rolling Rock someone else brought over, but a few tried the Stone. One guy commented it tasted like one of his dirty socks. It's like, that was $15 for a six pack - a total waste of money when I could have brought over some high quality **** like Corona or something.

Thanks grue, exactly the kind of response I was looking for... actually meant to mention sierra nevada as a nice "in between" type that I have found so far. Will try summit epa and Surly furious if I can find them. Tried stone IPA and found it "meh" I mean I can only pay 15 dollars for a 6pack so many times before getting annoyed with not being able to detect the increase in quality.

I wouldn't consider Stone to be in between, but agree with Sierra and even think their double IPA, Torpedo, is on the tamer side. Also, drinking heavier beers with lower IBU's may help you - Green Flash Double Stout, yum...

Had a friend come over and stay the night recently and he arrived with a 4-pack of DFH 90 minute IPAs and left the next morning without taking them. Good for me!

We would have wasted them all but I was still on meds and hadn't drank in a month.

Not a huge fan of the 90 but it's certainly "good" and I love the fact that it's strong and you can nurse one and get a decent buzz somewhere in your 2nd bottle I guess. Don't keep track but you get the point. I won't be pissing 80 times a night.

We went camping recently and utilized the strategy of only stocking high ABVs. This makes practical sense as you need far less ice and less cooler space. Before my friend and I would get a 24 pack of piss beer and need 4 ****ing bags of ice and an extra cooler just to keep it cool. I think we only had Arrogant Bastards and 90 minute IPAs last time. Another dude who came with us (wife's cousin) stocked nothing but piss beers. The only one I Remember was orange cans of Busch ****ing beer. It didn't say Oktoberfest but it had brown leaves on it. I tried a can and it tasted like water. We tossed him a 90 minute DFH. He probably hated it though he said he liked it and is a legit alcoholic.

Have tried Shock Top Belgian White this week and enjoy it. I seem to really dig the Belgian whites in general. I do think I preferred Blue Moon's version though.

Haven't seen the Sierra Nevada Celebration at the grocery store but I'll probably make a run to the liquor outlet and pick some up. Sounds pretty good!

Sorry for the long post but I went a month without alcohol recently so...yeah

I'm kinda 50/50 on stone. Their IPA and pale ale is good and buyable at $10/6pack around here but arrogant bastard oaked and ruination at $17/6pack is a total joke. Absolutely not worth it. Torpedo pretty much tastes exactly like ruination and is 1/3 the cost.

Just had the pleasure of trying Stone Smoked Porter. It was pretty tasty but I have yet to find a Porter I like better than:

So I would love to hear some other recommendations to try. I've been told Founders Breakfast Stout is really good so I will be trying that next. Another beer I discovered recently that many people probably have never heard of is a German beer: Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Urbock. It basically taste like a campfire and is pretty awesome.

So guys, whats some good Porter suggestions for me?

Alaskan's smoked porter is a great one that would combine both of what you just said. Yazoo Sue is another smoked porter that is probably better but will be harder to find.

I've really enjoyed this New Belgium Ale for a Christmasy type of beer. Very drinkable and tasty, notes of chocolate and chestnuts roasting over an open fire or something. I personally like it better than their Fat Tire variety.

To the guy who wrote about about developing a palette I can say that I drank watery beers for years and probably even swore that I would never like the good ones. Around the time that I actually became legal to drink I started getting into better ones, and like someone else said Sierra Nevada was the beer that got me into IPA's, and now I can't live without 'em. Another tip that may seem too obvious is that if you're drinking good/expensive beers, make sure you're drinking them out of a proper glass. Out of the bottle I think you can't really taste all the flavors of the beer properly and it can ruin it.

Also, as a small brag, one of my local bars has $2 pints of anything on draft on Tuesdays, which right now includes arrogant bastard, several varieties of Sam, Flat 12 Porter, the New Belgium I just mentioned(and fat tire), sierra nevadas, and a few other seasonal beers and such that rotate (plus the classics). Due to our status as regulars, this price is given to us on Sunday and Monday nights as well! It's great!

Picked up a 6-pack of Blue Moon Winter Abbey last night. I usually prefer higher alcohol very hoppy beers but this is delicious for a lighter ale. I think it's around 5.5%abv.

Just picked up 2 120 Minute Ales - they are definitely around. Under $10 a bottle too. (12 oz.)

I'll drink one and throw one in the cellar.

Stone Ruination is pretty fantastic if you ask me, but yeah 18 bucks a 6-pack is a bit much. Sierra Nevada Torpedo IPA is a great value/beer at a little over half the price.

why wouldn't you just buy the bomber of ruination?
