I just tried the Chicory Stout to give them another shot, and again I'm left with a pretty unimpressive, bland, depthless, overpriced beer.
The good news is that I have a new Lagunitas growler in the fridge...and they rarely disappoint.
Dogfish Head's IPA's (and IPA spinoffs) are really their strong suit. The 90 minute / Imperial, the Indian Brown Ale, and their Burton Baton are all exceptional. The 60 minute is also very good.
For non-IPA beers, their fall Punkin Ale is one of the better pumpkin ales (my favorite is Schlafly though). The Palo Santo Marron is also wonderful. I haven't tried the Worldwide Stout--it's quite expensive--but it's supposed to be phenomenal.
I agree that things like their Chicory Stout and Raison D'Être are very disappointing. But then I don't really care for most beers with those kinds of added flavors. I do like pumpkin ales, the occasional coffee porter/stout, and Abita has a pecan ale that I really like, but most of Dogfish Head's weird brews just don't do it for me.
