Well then, where do you place ales that are lagered, such as kolsch, altbier, and biere de garde? Nobody thinks those are lagers. They are ales that are lagered.

Lager is a type of beer brewed using a bottom fermenting yeast (in simplistic terms).

Ale is a type of beer brewed using top fermenting yeast.

Lagering is a technique of cold storage used for most lagers and some ales.

I feel like I'm indirectly responsible for this nitty "what constitutes a lager" discussion. Sorry, thread.

Can't remember if it's already been posted itt or not (prob has), but Great Divide's Hercules might be my new favorite IPA.

If I wanted to continue nitting it up I would clarify that Hercules is actually a Double IPA, but I won't (Titan is their regular IPA and it's fantastic as well).

Anyway, Great Divide is, well, pretty great in general. My favorite is the Old Ruffian Barleywine. Pick one up if you're able to.

These are all tier 1 for me as fairly common beers that I have consumed the most of over the last 10 to 14 years.
Lagunitas Lil Sumpin
Stone IPA
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale
DogfishHead 60 Minute IPA
Brooklyn Lager

I enjoy a few different beers from Sam Adams. No I'm not being biased because I'm from the area haha. I tend to enjoy more micro brews now opposed to the macro lagers that are out there. Don't get me wrong there's nothing wrong with drinking bud light because it is a very session-able beer. Boston Lager by Sam Adams is a great choice. It's a really nice dinner beer that is full bodied with great taste. You can drink more than a few of them and not be totally full. It's a good segway into micro brews. I always liked stouts , like Youngs Double Chocolate Stout or a Dogfish head Stout. As far as seasonal beers go , Pumpking is the **** , brewed by Southern Tier.

I'd be shocked - shocked - if most commercial barleywines were brewed with champ yeast. I'm sure there are a few that may introduce wine yeast at some point to help with attenuation, but barleywine is decidedly an ale, brewed with ale yeast.

I was going to mention this too, but I've been called a nit several times in the thread for correcting inaccurate information. But in any case, you're correct - most barley wines are fermented with ale yeast.

Going back to where I had my favorite (Rockmill Saison) tomorrow. Anyone have recommendations for any other Rockmill brews (I think they had four on the menu, but can't remember which ones).

Cheers!

I hate that my go-to beer is called "Stella Artois"

I try to mumble "stella" really fast and hope the bartender doesn't make me repeat it

Or if I get called out it's obviously for my gf

Otherwise Heineken or Rainier

Considering its a PJ20 beer I would say hold onto it for collecting purposes (even tho at heart I want to say try it )

Yeah, why not just order a Heineken to begin with? They both taste the same, and the bar will most likely have the Heineken.

I think it was 3 liters and 9 ounces.

The bottles were massive.

Well funny enough... for whatever reason... more bars around here have Stella than Heineken. That's the only reason I started drinking it. I think it's cuz a lot of bars in Seattle pride themselves on only serving fancy shmancy beer and Heineken doesn't make the cut (on tap anyway) Stella is often the only good blonde option.

They are 3 liters. They will also refill the bottle for you, but only what is on the bottle label, so if it's a DB bottle 2011 release, I'm not sure they'll refill it next year, but it's $26 for the refill and $17 for the AB. Looks like you can buy a 5 gallon keg of Ruination for $104.
