Early in college, I was so broke I decided I could no longer afford the good beer and had to go as cheap as possible. To me, that was Milwaukee's Best Ice. Beast Ice was both stronger and cheaper than any other beer I could get in TN. I went two straight months where not a drop of any alcoholic beverage passed my lips, except for Beast Ice. The Beast was... not good. Slight alcohol burn, no malt flavor to disguise it, just an odd grain sensation at the start immediately followed by the taste of an inevitable hangover. Of course, at the time, I couldn't have told you any of that. If you asked me what it was like, I'd have responded, simply, "Ugh."
Eventually, I broke. I couldn't take it anymore. I got a job, and with my new-found riches, splurged on fine, good beer: Natural Light. I **** you not, I can still
vividly remember the taste of that first cold, cold can of Natty Light after two months of Beast Ice. It was cold, crisp, clean, refreshing, beautiful. I felt like I couldn't get enough of it (and I couldn't, at the time). Later I'd live in Germany, explore craft beers, brew my own, and make a living brewing beer, but I'll never forget that particular can of Natty Light and how great it tasted.
