Are they all like psycho sex torture cases? My 14yo daughter was really into Serial and maybe she'd like it.

Haha, my wife is the same. Yeah, plenty of pyscho sex torture **** as well as missing persons, fun paranormal stuff etc.

This is probably obvious, but I was asking if it is psycho-sex-torture because I'm not going to recommend it to my kid if it is.

Hidden Brain is good and they are short which is refreshing after listing to a bunch of Hardcore History.

I've always enjoyed the little reports from Shankar Vedantam on NPR news (marketplace? all things considered? I don't remember) and finally started listening to his show.

What apps do people use for podcasts? I use the regular ios app but am considering anything else at this point, it's always been a little buggy but the thing has become nearly unusable since iOS 10. I constantly have podcasts come back from the dead, reappearing in my feed after I've listened and deleted them, the app gets confused as hell if I try to listen to a pod that I haven't yet downloaded while I'm on a marginal network (e.g. I'm getting in the car, phone still thinks it's on my house wifi, push play and it can't quite get there until the phone decides to switch to LTE, podcast app just freaks out and says "podcast unavailable" forever). etc.

Considering stitcher, any others I should look at? Only must-have feature for me is ability to listen at 2x speed.

I use Grover Podcast on my PC and phone. It's great, but I've no idea if it's available for iOS at the moment.

pvn,

casts is really nice but is an upfront payment. i use that currently.
overcast is also nice and is free, subscription payment to remove ads.

both of these do diff playback speeds and a 'trim silence' thing to remove the pauses in and between sentences.

i used to like the ios app but when we went to ios 9 i absolutely hated it. the only annoying thing is, the two podcasts above don't let you search the name of episodes / description, only by podcast. so if you wanted to get a list of pods that someone you like has been on recently, you still need to use the ios app or a service online. you may never have even done that, but occasionally i'll carry out a couple of searches like that. other than that, they're great.

Overcast is the best free app on iOS. ****s all over the native app.

Thx for the Sword & Scale Rec SUB - been enjoying it recently.

Also, another decent true crime pod is Casefile. First few eps are a bit meh but once the guy finds his feet they get really good.

Well, looks like they will be going for another 4 years or until impeachment.

What do you guys look for in a pod app? I've never used one that wasn't good enough for me; not sure what i'm missing.

Rambling:

The number one feature for me is the ability to playback at 2x. I got fed up with the apple app because it was constantly getting ****ed up on managing downloads and remembering which episodes were already listened to.

I tried stitcher but it is really bad at managing old episodes (there are certain podcasts where I want to keep some episodes and replay them). It also injects ads between episodes.

Overcast is great because I can set the playback speed on a per-podcast basis (this was another beef I had with the apple app, I listen to some discussion podcasts and some music ones, so switching constantly between speeds was a huge pain). The only complaint I have so far is that I can't set the default behavior for what to do with played episodes on a per-podcast basis (some I want to delete after hearing, some I don't). This was one area where apple got it right. When you hear an episode in apple, even if you have that channel set to delete heard episodes, it actualy just marks the episode for deletion and gives you 24 hours to manually override, which is perfect.

I'm new to the podcast world, what's wrong with the standard iOS app?

TBH, I wouldn't mind using the native app if it wasn't so slow to download, buggy and prone to crashing.

this 100%

As designed, it's almost perfect for my use case. It just sucks at downloading and it crashes insanely frequently

Can anybody recommend any decent history pods other than hardcore history? Been through all of Dan's back catalogue now and need something to fill the gap until his next episode.

Particularly interested in anything covering the Cold War or Vietnam war.

For shorter ones I like the BBC's In our Time. It's been going forever, and covers tons of topics, but the history ones are here:

Missing Richard Simmons

Richard Simmons (of late night infomercial fitness VHS video fame) abruptly disappeared from the public eye in early 2014. This podcast is an investigation as to why he disappeared and where he is. Hosted by a documentary film maker who knew Simmons. There are 6 episodes, and it sounded like the 6th episode is intended to be the last.

Simmons had quite a remarkable life. This was like a good documentary film in podcast form.

The Fall of Rome
https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/...141563910?mt=2

Other podcasts I've started listening to in the last 6-9 months and like:

Containers - How shipping containers impacted everything (8 episode series, currently through 5)
50 Things The Made the Modern Economy - 10 minute episodes about things that you may or may not realize were important
Pod Save America - liberal weenie podcast, formerly Keepin' It 1600
Exponent - My favorite podcast on tech strategy and commentary
Revisionist History - Malcolm Gladwell
Exchanges at Goldman Sachs - Kind of a Planet Money on steroids, kind of a super-smarmy finance podcast
The McKinsey Podcast - 30 minute episodes that basically cover their whitepapers/reports
