I was also going to post that ITEW had come back from the apparent dead, but it's definitely not the best ever imo. Barbary Wars or Krakatoa FTW.

I was using hyperbole clearly, and to each their own, but I just find the Endurance Expedition an extremely fascinating story to begin with and this was a very well told version.

I think you would have at least one casualty if you put 6 men in a 22' boat and just had them sit out in the middle of Lake Mead for 17 days, but it's just incredible that they were able to sail the James Caird with no motor or modern navigation tools, in below freezing weather, 60 MPH winds, 40' seas and hit an island 800 miles away. Let alone with everything that happened before and after.

I am in so deep with this Israel Keyes podcast series (True Crime Bull****)

In the end it’s sticking with me more than any other true crime material, which is saying something

He’s literally the worst

I'm about 50 hours into Not Another D&D Podcast (NADDPOD) having never played D&D and super regretting not getting into it in high school.

How old are you LBR? I was in high school 20 years ago and don't remember anyone being into D&D, it was all magic the Gathering and Pokemon when we were younger. Seemed like it was phased out by my generation.

Lol 19 years of posting on 2+2 here, but I have similar regrets about never playing poker or bragging about my LSAT scores.

I gotta go with the ITEW episode on Duels here as best yet.

Anyone listen to The Dollop? Skip the first ten minutes of ads and the last two minutes and that middle part is pretty funny stuff.

I love The Dollop but, as you said, check the comments to skip ads. Generally hits a lot more than it misses, but can run with the same joke for a a whole show.

I'm going to check it out but I barely dabbled in D&D. Me and my friends just weren't that nerdy.

We played the Star Wars version instead.

Don't get me started on when we discovered that Force Points weren't required for every time we'd use the Force.

We wasted years playing unorthodoxly. Years!

History

Dan Carlin's Hardcore History - the best podcasts in the history of podcasts, he takes one thing you probably spent 10 minutes covering in class and goes into such nuanced detail in 12 hour session split up into 4 episodes.

History of Rome - easily digestible history of rome with most emperors getting about 20 minutes each covering from start to finish

History of Byzantium - an unofficial sequel of a fan of the History of Rome picks up where the other ended and follows the East for another thousand years until it too fell

Social Sciences

This American Life - honestly though, their earlier stuff much better

Freakanomics - since being acquired by stitcher they've been dumping in the ads and stuff but still a great listen

The Economist - hit or miss, really easy to figure out the duds real quick and move on

Serial - First season is great, haven't been able to get through second season though

All Things Considered - Terri Gross is perhaps the greatest radio interviewer ever, focuses on a very wide range of things and been introduced to a lot of novels, movies and music that I loved which I'd never otherwise have found or expected to like

Reply All - like this american life but brief and tech related - hit or miss but the good ones are excellent - major leak is that you need to listen for a good 10 minutes before you have any idea if you'll like the episode or not

Planet Money - Freakanomics without the frills but often better

News

The Daily - NYT and hit or miss but like the economist easy to just skip over the ones you don't find interesting

Up First - NPR just running through the news, tends to hedge more towards politics

Sports

Bill Simmons - he's like your favorite uncle, a familiar and friendly voice you enjoy having around

The Lowe Post - your nerdier uncle who isn't half as entertaining nor enjoyable to be around but much stronger on the actual analysis (basically Bill for everything and Lowe for stuff you care enough about to hear the nuance)

The Action Network - they had the best golf podcast but it's been steadily getting worse and they recently folded them all into one channel, this is only here for their earlier stuff, I'm already on the verge of unsubbing

Daily Fantasy Edge - I'll listen to anything Adam Levitan says, it's Joe Ingram with an education (love you Joe and this isn't a knock on your intelligence but it tilts me hearing you mispronounce any word longer than 6 letters) this is something that I'm not sure if it'll be around much longer though since they founded a new site. Also wish Adam wasn't such a friendly interviewer, he lets a lot of his guests brazenly lie without challenging or calling them out on it. Listen to his interview with Condia though, great stuff.

Like Hoop2410 was claiming he makes lineups by hand, doesn't use projections and doesn't work with others, claims he doesn't know his win rate or ROI etc etc... I can name a dozen other accounts that all magically produce the same cash line as him every day - which means they are using same projections methodology or working together. That's just one example I can think of off top of my head, he's so focused on being friendly and buddies with the people he interviews he let's them rape the audience with bull****.

Sorry, for the rant but there is just so many reacharounds handed out by DFS touts I find it horribly frustrating.

Fantasy Feast - like Daily Fantasy Edge but 1/5 the content

Puck Soup - imagine hanging out at a bar with a couple old friends who are funny and know hockey inside and out - this is my favorite sports related podcast by far

Fantasy Golf Degenerates - with the Action network slipping, this one is taking up the reigns, still don't like it very much but most golf podcasts are truly awful, I understand they are trying to do it profitably but the amount of plugs and ads can be frustrating - also wish he didn't dumb it down as much as he did - sometimes I think he plays dumb to try to reach a wider audience

Tour Junkies - if they condenses their 3 hour show into 20 minutes it would be #1, instead it's something I only listen to as I fall asleep sometimes. They have the ability and the connections but would rather do plugs and talk about vodka. They drink as they record and it shows, they can't focus on anything, don't have any direction or narrative and after the first 30 minutes they are so sloppy it just becomes word soup. I do appreciate that they are attempting to fully separate the golf talk first before they just start rambling about whatever random stuff I don't care about but I'm telling you, I would pay good money for a sober version of this where they planned out what they would say ahead of time and kept it restricted to 30 minutes, these guys are diamonds in the rough but apparently enjoy the rough a little too much to try to get that polish they need

Always Cheating - my lifeline for all things premiere league. A lot of their content is garbage but their previews and such are a pretty good way to prime myself for the upcoming slate

Game Theory and Money - I wish Cynthia would just do her own show, the guy who just focuses on being her hype man is incredibly annoying. The show has a deceptive title and rarely goes into details but it's interesting to listen to for football fans

Sharp Footbal Analysis - I wish this show was the one hosted by Cynthia better content but quants don't often make for good hosts

Bob Ryan's Boston Podcast - if you grew up in Mass and like sports, there's gotta be at least a few interviews here you'd love with your childhood heroes

Business

How I Built This - interviews with founders - incredibly fascinating hearing how large and well known companies started out

StartUp - like how I built this but with much more production quality and really stretched out - first year is the voyage of a This American Life producer founding a podcasting company as they go to meetings with VCs, pick out a name, hire staff, etc and then later episodes are mini-series on other companies starting out

Business Wars - hilariously bad production quality but very interesting nonetheless, they take well known instances of corporate rivalry (like Netflix vs Blockbuster) then dramatize it and tell it kind of half narrative, half old time radio drama. This can be cheesy at times abut overall very interesting - just makes you wonder how much is artistic license when they give people in 1 on 1 conversations dialogue etc etc.

Poker

Joe Ingram - just love his interview series, let's me live vicariously as the high stakes pro I never became. Podcast is 10x better than the vodcast because then you don't have to stare at Joe in a wife beater.

Also forgot the Moth (getting worse though as they now want to include more and a lot of the lesser stories are making the cut), Slate's Negotiation Academy as a nice one off and Sh*t Town is a pretty interesting voyage that meanders aimlessly without any purpose but still keeps you wanting more.

+1 to Sessions. The humor and smart live pro knowledge remind me of the old limon PokerSesh podcasts, without the trolling and with better NLHE strategy(especially on bluffing). The arc of "Quarter Million in Debt back to flush", kids stories, and raw emotion keep it really interesting episode to episode. This is going to blow up(as much as a poker podcast can) IMO

If you're into Big Tech, Pivot is a pretty good podcast. It's Kara Swisher & Scott Galloway, who are both very smart, and equally opinionated (Swisher also has the good Recode Decode podcast).

This podcast started because Galloway would occasionally be a guest on Swisher's other podcast, and they were pretty much the most popular episodes.

I want to recommend Dark Net Diaries. It's a bit like Reply All but only investigates topics in cyber security. The host is in the industry and the episodes are not only fascinating, but also usually include interviews with people involved in the case (black hatters, police, Pen testers, etc). I'm not really a technical guy and I understand it fine. I'd recommend starting with Jeremy from Marketing or Black Duck Eggs to see you if you like it.

+1. I just went on an 11 hour road trip (overnight to avoid traffic) and I chose this podcast to binge based on recommendations. When it started off I was a bit worried the style would put me to sleep but I decided to give it a shot. And of course the last 100 miles of any road trip are the longest but that's when I got to ep 19. I was absolutely wired through the whole story. Better than caffeine.

Man In The Window was decent.

Enjoying Crimetown season 2 - on par with season 1.

Just binged a load of Business Wars on a road trip this weekend. Good stuff. Story style narrative reminds me of Michael Lewis’ books.

In the Dark Season 2 has a four episode update on the Curtis Flowers case. A lot of it was focusing on the Supreme Court and it was pretty fascinating.

Ear Hustle is still fantastic.

Man in the Window was alright.

Adam Buxton podcast

He's a legendary (to me anyway) UK comic writer and performer. It's interviews, but for his 100th episode he brings on Joe Cornish, his writing partner, and Louis Theroux. They all went to school together and it's hilarious listening to them revert back to 13yos.
Definitely highly recommend it even if you ignore hid other stuff.
