i guess the only reason cheeseburger is disqualified is because it is miles ahead of everything else

As for the Pittsburgh all-in-on style, I think they are good but not great. In general, I'm not a big fan of fries in sandwiches or burritos, they throw the bready/starchy ratio off.

JT: bagels and lox are def excellent.

btc, JT:
french bread pizza? No, because first off, it's a ****ing pizza. Second off, and more importantly, it has no top. Cit got that right - open-faced "sandwiches" are not sandwiches.

Hot dog? No. It's a hot dog, not a sandwich. Same with sausage/brat on a roll. Now, slice that sausage up, you got yourself a sausage sandwich. Does that make sense? Not really. But I don't make the rules, they are what they are.

Quesadilla? GTFO. It's a quesadilla, and it's made with tortillas, not bread. You want a melted cheese sandwich, it's already on the list. GRILLED CHEESE!

As stated earlier, I do agree that lobster roll is borderline.
Agree about the hot dog because it’s impossible to refute that argument. It would not have won anyway, but they deserve to be in the convo if even just to be refused entry.

Why is rare cold roast beef in the top tier, but turkey/ham/club etc is in the also rans?

I feel like hot thanksgiving leftover style turkey sandwich (w/stuffing, mashed taters, cran sauce, etc) should be separate from regular deli style turkey sandwich

It doesn't really make sense that pulled pork sandwich and fried chicken sandwich qualify, but hamburger doesn't.

This is actually a pretty solid writeup:

Can Burgers and Hot Dogs Be Considered Sandwiches?
Is anything a sandwich when it’s on bread?

In life, sometimes we encounter questions whose answers shake us to our very core and make us question everything we thought we knew on an existential level. Whether burgers and hot dogs can be considered sandwiches is not one of those questions. But it’s still worth asking.

The answer comes down to another profound question: What, exactly, is a sandwich? Merriam-Webster defines it as “two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between.” Simple enough. Essentially, anything can be a sandwich so long as it’s between two slices of bread or inside a roll or bun. So yes, unequivocally, hot dogs and hamburgers are very much sandwiches.

But it’s not so simple. When we think of sandwiches, we think of peanut butter and jelly, or a turkey club, or an Italian sub, not a bacon cheeseburger. Just like when we think of fruit, we think of apples and bananas, not tomatoes (which are in fact fruits). Burgers and hot dogs exist in their own section of the menu, separate from the “Sandwiches.” For all intents and purposes, they are completely different food items from sandwiches. But in terms of classifications, these cookout staples are indeed sandwiches, whether you think of them that way or not.
So, technically, yes they are sandwiches. But in practice, no.

Because a rare cold roast beef sandwich (maybe with some onions and blue cheese) is a sublime work of art, while the others you list are just ordinary run-of-the-mill sandwiches.

I considered hot thanksgiving turkey sandwich, but wasn't sure it was commonplace enough to make the rankings. Maybe I'll combine that with just hot turkey sandwich. A place by me makes this amazing one. Double-thick slice of bread, heaped with slices of turkey, topped with a scoop of mashed potato, and covered in gravy. Wouldn't count in these rankings because it's open-faced, but goddamn is it good!

So, additions pending:
Hot turkey (incl with Thanksgiving fixings)
Primanti bros all-in-one Pittsburgh (with fries and coleslaw inside)
BBQ beef
Sausage & peppers

greg,

A bagel is not a bread!

(don't post any links talking about what defines breads or other stupid bull**** like that in response to this)

If a sandwich is two pieces of bread surrounding a filling of some sort, then a loaf of bread is a sandwich.

It’s a slippery slope. Ice cream sandwiches? Clearly no. So hot dog no.

JT,

Ice cream sandwiches aren’t ice cream between bread.

If you took a slice of bread, spread some ice cream on it, and put another piece of bread on top - that would be an ice cream sandwich that was actually a sandwich.

Italian ice cream sandwich

Veal parm, eggplant parm

Where's the grilled chicken (preferably with roasted red peppers and fresh mozz)?

Sandwich lovers,

It’s not looking to be an exhaustive list. Just a list of the top sandwiches that are fairly common.

I considered that and the basic peanut butter, banana, and honey sandwich, but thought they’re a little too obscure. Maybe it deserves a spot in honor of the king!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen an eggplant parm sandwich. And veal parm sandwiches are super rare too. I’m sure they’re delicious, but not common sandwiches.

Sandwich lovers,

There are a lot of great sandwiches! As it stands, we’d have a play-in round of 16 contenders, then those winners plus the elite eight compete for the championship.

Anything in the contenders you think should switch with an elite 8?

Anything in the rest more deserving than one of the contenders?

Elite tier one sandwiches:
Combo pork banh mi
Reuben
Fried shrimp po-boy
BLT(preferably BLTA)
Lobster roll
Breakfast sandwich (egg + bacon/sausage + cheese)
Italian sub
Fried chicken

Contenders:
Chicken parm
Pastrami on rye
Rare cold roast beef
Pulled pork
Grilled cheese
Brisket (chopped or sliced)
Cheesesteak
Meatball
Porchetta
Cuban
Italian beef
Egg Salad (including curried egg)
Muffaletta
corned beef
Fried fish
tuna melt

The rest:
Grilled chicken breast
meatloaf
Caprese
French Dip
Chicken salad
Hot turkey (incl with Thanksgiving fixings)
Primanti bros all-in-one Pittsburgh (with fries and coleslaw inside)
BBQ beef
Sausage & peppers
Hot roast beef
Peanut butter and honey (and bacon for the King)
Club
Turkey
Ham and cheese
tuna salad
Peanut butter and jelly
Sloppy joe
Monte Cristo
Croque madame/monsieur
Oyster poboy

I don't really understand the fried chicken sandwich in the elite category. Good fried chicken on its own is already elite, and throwing it in between two pieces of bread doesn't elevate it imo.

I'm pro the elite PATTY MELT being considered a sandwich rather than a hamburger.

Also, this should be helpful:

The notion that you can have three foods that differ only in a single, non-essential ingredient such that food one has ingredient A, food 2 has ingredient A' which is identical to ingredient A except for slicing, and food 3 has ingredient B which shares nothing in common with ingredient A, and we are supposed to accept that foods one and 3 are sandwiches while food 2 is most definitely not a sandwich, despite the existence of numerous restaurants specializing in food 2 specifically referring to their versions of food 2 as sandwiches, is ridiculous.

Burgers are sandwiches. Wtf is this exclusion bull****?

Spider: yes, was looking for that chart! Three in the top left are sandwiches. Everything else isn’t. I think you’re prob right about the patty melt. As for fried chicken sandwiches, a chick fil a sandwich is a spectacular sandwich! But maybe I’ll flip it with chicken parm.

Greg: I’m aware they exist. But come on, who gets eggplant parm sandwiches? And I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a veal parm sandwich. A quick scan of local Italian places shows chicken parm a lot more common than eggplant parm sandwiches, and nobody has veal parm sandwiches.

Wookie,

A burger is a burger, not a sandwich. Just like how you stick a hot dog in the roll, it’s a hot dog. Stick some cold cuts in there and it’s a sandwich.
