What do you eat? What do you eat?

03-07-2018 , 01:09 AM
LFS recently posted his crazy diet of the same things every day, and Dids just posted about not caring very much about food. We also have people debating about tasting menus and fine dining, with some loving them and others not caring for them at all. And then people talking about all sorts of guilty pleasures.

So this got me wondering:

What does your regular eating routine look like?

What foods do you love? Which do you not care for?

Are there any foods most people don’t like that you really enjoy? Foods people rave about that you think are terrible or just overrated?

What do you eat, OOT?

For the last month I've been eating subway twice a day. Trying to lose 50 pounds or so. I know they aren't the best sandwiches nor the best thing to eat but it's easy and I know how many calories are in it. -16 pounds so far.

Bruschetta with roasted garlic, goat cheese, basil, tomatoes & olive oil on toasted, garlic-rubbed sourdough. Only available during tomato season:

Great idea for a thread. Will post a detailed reply later when I am on my PC. One thing I will say is that my eating is somewhat seasonal as I often am incorporating things from my garden into my meals.

Solid plan. While not that great, I like subway sandwiches fine. Especially the BMT and the cheaper version spicy Italian (both not toasted, Italian bread with provolone, lettuce, green peppers, extra onions, sometimes jalapeño, salt/pepper/vinegar/oil), if they are trying to charge outrageous full price for the BMT. It used to be the only convenient fast place near an office of mine and I’ve had many, many subway sandwiches. Also was strangely into their very mediocre meatball sandwich, with just onions and provolone, toasted of course.

What sandwiches are you eating?

27,

That looks delicious. I don’t keep bread around because I just eat it all when I have it, but often just eat sliced tomatoes and avocado drizzled with olive oil, salt and pepper. Sometimes get a little fresh MOOTZARELL to go with it.

I'll eat anything except for peas, pickled beets and liver.

I can't stand beets or liver and I'm extremely allergic to peas.

What sandwiches are you eating?
I alternate between meatball marinara with American cheese and ham, bacon, American cheese.

Yeah, you and lapka and your gardens. I’ll also make a detailed post when at my computer. Nothing from my garden, though!

The meal I have had the most in the last 7-8 months is Duck Choo Chee from a place near my work. I often skip breakfast so its the right amount of filling for lunch (even tho lately I've been doing a Wholefood's jalapeno-cheddar bagel with 1/3 fat cream cheese with my first coffee, and have done small breakfast burritos in the past).

At dinner it is a combination of making food, which has been highly weighed towards some type of curry, then pasta, then proteins (Chicken thighs, salmon, scallops, swordfish, short rib) with rice + beans, vegetables, potatoes, etc. then any random thing from a cookbook or mostly something we randomly are craving. I probably make food 1-2 week nights on average.

Takeout in some form is usually 2-3 meals during the week. This ranges from sushi/pizza/asian/mexican/indian/random stuff. It is about 50% places that are mainly takeout and 50% places that are mainly sit-down. When it is nice out and summer, will usually just go out instead of doing takeout for the ones where it is a decent restaurant close by I would be taking out from.

Sometimes do fast casual places like sweetgreen, chipotle, vegan places, burgers, etc.

Probably go out to restaurants on 50% of the weekend nights. Rarely high end tasting menu places, more like Mortons and around that quality all the way down to just random places like ones that make soup dumplings.

One interesting part of my diet, growing up I never ate much or cared for sweets. Sure, chocolate and occasional treats were good, but it was uncommon for me to eat dessert. My wife on the other hand always had dessert type foods growing up and she got me into them and now I love desserts. Sometimes even a small piece of dark chocolate completely hits the spot. Although I have always loved creme brulee.

FU,

What's your plan when you lose the weight? Still incorporate Subway into one of your meals to ensure you maintain the loss?

Larry,

I also grew up in a household that rarely had desserts. Oh wait maybe I misread it. Did you just skip dessert or was it something your family didn't have regularly?

You were correct, my family rarely had it. Our attitude was basically a cross between never thinking about it and preferring to eat "real food" when hungry.

Which I still definitely do prefer real food when I am hungry. But I realize after a meal dessert can be awesome.

I would go crazy eating the same thing every day, like seriously crazy.

Coffee in the morning, breakfasts vary. Maybe a waffle, or if there's leftover rice, I'll fry it with egg. Lunch is usually prior dinner leftovers and dinner is a wide variety of munchery items because my wife works for one of those companies that effectively provides a daily stipend for dinner that far exceeds what a normal person can eat so we end up with a few munchery meals every week.

I love pizza and sushi but not together. We eat a lot more white fish than people normally do (wife favors hirame and the associated engawa, my favorite fish is kanpachi, yay ciguatera!) Been drinking a lot more beer these days.

I dislike eggplant, persimmons, red delicious apples, tripe, a few other things, but I'm an omnivore...you don't get a body like this by being a picky eater.

Several years ago, I would have listed JitB as something I liked that people don't like, but I find these days I don't like it that much either.

Chick Fil A and foie are overrated. I said it.

ETA: Do you steak thread people never go to a steak house any more? I used to love getting a big steak for special occasions, but now it's like sous vide, cast iron dutch oven, Costco steak and yeah, the sides might not be as good, but we saved $200-300. Haven't been to a steak house in forever.

Make no mistake, eating the same thing basically every day is indeed crazy. No two ways about it.

Rexx,

Most likely. Probably keep that one meal and not worry too much about what I eat for the other. My problem before this was I drank a lot of soda. I've essentially replaced that with water completely. Still occasionally have a diet Coke.

The last time I ate out before all this was at outback steakhouse. I looked up the calories of what I ate for dinner and it was close to 3000 calories alone.

I hardly ever eat breakfast. Get up at 4:30 for work and drive a hour and a half to get there so I'd basically eat chips and unhealthy snacks until I got off work at 5 then stuff my face with a huge pasta dish from a place by my house.

Now I buy a foot long the night before and have that for breakfast/lunch and get a 6 inch on the way home for dinner. With some 100 Cal special k snack bars sporadically.

The less effort it takes to prepare the less tempted i am to do something i'll regret. Yogurt + bran + berries is effortless and surprisingly low in calories. Tilapia is a really easy fish to cook, not expensive and doesn't have the pungent fish smell that turns a lot of people off. Cottage cheese is probably the easiest protein source in terms of prep time and i eat them with ready made curries for flavoring.

Tim hortons started using carved turkey for their turkey bacon club... way better for sodium intake and tastes a lot better imo than their coldcuts. Would recommend.

Also a big fan of frozen pizzas - i think people are too critical of them when comparing to "real" pizza. The delissio rustico line is a favorite and worth a try if you haven't.

Larry,

Thanks for clarifying. I tried to go back and reread your post but it just kept jumping all over the place so I gave up.

FU,

Personally eating nothing but subway everyday would do my head in but if you enjoy it well enough and it's working for you I can understand the appeal, especially with you working such long hours. Good luck with the weight loss!

OT,

Leftover rice with egg sounds like my type of breakfast. Unfortunately I tend to eat too much rice so adding it to my breakfast rotation would not be good for my waistline. I love white fish but only tend to eat it if I have caught it or am eating out as my bf isn't a huge fan and cooking two different meals would be nightmarish.

Abba,

I really like yoghurt, berries and chia seeds!

Tacos.

I could eat tacos 4 or 5 days a week and be perfectly happy.
I go to one of the local taco trucks or a taqueria (Los Gallos!) at least once a week for lunch, and sometimes several times.
And then I'll grill carne asada or chicken, or make chile verde, carnitas, etc over the weekend if we're home.
Plus breakfast tacos. Scrambled eggs, cheese, fried tater tots, and bacon are where its at. But I usually eat breakfast tacos at dinnertime, becasue I don't eat an actual breakfast most days that I have work.
Man, tacos are great!

I'm not a big fan of dessert type sweets, and don't like chocolate in general - unless it's combined with peanut butter. Reese cups and reese's pieces are the most likely candy to go missing from my kids trick or treat bags.
And cheese cake is one of the few desserts I do really enjoy, but only New York style. F that fluffy Philly nonsense. And regular cake can gtfo.

I started preparing/cooking my own food back in college when I had little money. I used to love to calculate the cost of my ingredients and then marveled at how little I had spent compared to what the same meal would cost at a restaurant. I have more money these days and I don't bother calculating, but I think limiting food expenses is still a driving force in my choices.

I still feel kind of financially guilty about eating at restaurants or fast food places and I probably limit that to about once a week. Consequently, I almost never eat french fries. I've phased out bacon, sausage and a few other things because I can't stand preparing them. I'm quite sure I eat too much dairy, bread and pasta.

I want to get to Vegas this year, but I dread the thought of eating every meal out for a week, and I fear my stomach won't be able to handle it. When I cut back on restaurant food, my upset stomachs disappeared almost completely.

I eat what is available, not very picky.

Usually prefer eating birds, fish, rice, salads, and veggies when possible. Soups are also up there, as are curries.

Usually avoid cows, pigs, heavy sauces, breads.

Favorites items include nigiri, crab, avocados in any form, tomatoes, naan, toum, shawarma.

Favorite cuisines are Japanese and Lebanese.

Top guilty pleasure is most likely Chick-fil-a waffle fries.
