My question is... if this was a big party over 6 (or whatever), how come gratuity was not automatcally included on this check? Pretty insane if it somehow is the case that the restaurant doesn't have a gratuity policy for big parties (assuming this check came from a large party)
Pretty common place now that restaurants don't include gratuity on big parties. I think there might be some type of legislation going through in 2014 that restaurants can no longer include an auto gratuity. Don't quote me tho

The waitress came up embarrassed during the hilarious argument that ensued but this is the most tilting thing ever when people get more then enough covered for the bill and then essentially try and pocket the servers tip by leaving them less.
Maybe they all gave cash to snowmen's friend.

Seems unlikely someone would not tip then post it on facebook. Probably just trolling.

pwns,

Guessing he was the waiter. (at least, I hope so)

Yes that makes much more sense

Yes, the person who posted it was the waiter for this party.

Let that be clear.

I'd be surprised if a waiter is allowed to post something like that legally. If I ran the restaurant I would definitely fire whoever did that if I found out.

Yeah probably not the best idea by the waiter. I've seen some complain about tips or bad customers on Facebook and it always makes me cringe.

Could probably link their boss to it to get them fired.

I'd say the type of guy who would post a receipt of a customer with the sig, is probably the type of waiter who would do **** to make someone stiff him.

z4,

Yup, you're right, I bet the waiter totally didn't want a good tip from his big party running up a $1000 tab, he probably neglected them all night.

I wasn't talking about his service, ldo.

Ok, well assuming he gave good service, what kind of **** could he pull to deserve to get stiffed?

I never said deserve to get stiffed.

I would definitely get fired from my restaurant if I posted a check IF the customer's name or credit card # were able to be seen. I think we could get away with it if we blotted that info out, since our restaurant wouldn't be able to prove that it was even a check from their restaurant. It's kind of a dicey area. I mean, FB is private, yet public so I'm not sure legally where that leaves it.

I mean, could a restaurant fire you for telling a friend in your own free time about a customer who stiffed you? FB is just a much larger version of that, but at the same time much more public since others can read it.

Regardless, I have a couple checks I've taken pictures of that I'll definitely be posting, name and credit card number and all, when I eventually no longer work at my restaurant.

How does anyone know that the bill itself for $982 wasn't paid in credit card as it were, but a cash tip of $150 etc wasn't left on the table? I've done this myself, so don't say it doesn't happen. This Facebook post might be excoriating a party of people for no reason.

OK, just saw this. Foreigners maybe, who aren't familiar with the US tipping custom?

So waiters never neglect big parties ever, because they like money too much?

friend of mine's girl works parttime at a wafflehouse just to get out of the house (they have two small boys), and probably 75% of her posts on FB are bitching about people not tipping as much as she thinks they should.

normally i just scroll past, but once someone had a $20-something bill (honestly forget how much, assume $25 i guess as it was in the 20's) and left $5, but because they had a 2 year old who made a mess (crumbs, syrup, ketchup, that type of ****), she was bitching about how it should have been $10.

took everything i had to not reply along the lines of, 'bitch to wipe off a table for 30 extra seconds and to run the vacuum for a minute, $5 is fine you work at a waffle house'.

I worked as a waiter before and there were nights when I got stiffed or lowballed by multiple tables. Then there were nights where things clicked and customers were overly generous. In the end it balanced out to an average.

I knew there would be ups and downs with my tips on a nightly basis so I didn't stress too much about it. True, sometimes is was frustrating busting my butt and going home with way less than expected but I just sighed and hopes tomorrow would be better.

Granted this was a college job and I went back to my dorm to parties and girls, I still understood that it was a long run average.

If you're going to work in a tip based industry, learn to deal with it! It's part of the job. If you consistently get stiffed, either you are doing something wrong or the place you work is. Get a new job or a new field of work entirely. Just stop complaining.

The type of person that would stiff on a bill that large is scum. They are essentially stealing someones entire day of work. In general people that pick up other peoples tabs or pay for a large group tend to tip far below average, as most people who do this can't actually afford to do so, and compensate by lowballing the tip. I'm going to assume that cash was left for the tip on that bill. If that did actually happen at the establishment I work at, the house would have taken care of the server to make up for it.

i think it irritates me more that people automatically assume that that is a picture of a $1000 tab with no tip when that is most certainly not the case. talking about the guy who posted it saying everyone was all butthurt.

Aug etc,

Almost certainly:

a) a cash tip was left, and probably a nice one of at least $200, since most people who think to leave cash tips on CC's tend to be bigger tippers.

OR

b) there was some egregious terrible behavior by the server.

All I know is what was posted by her.

When she posted that picture, she said something along the lines of "**** this night!." She didn't respond or comment again in the some 100 comments and has since deleted that status from her Facebook. I guess the comments were becoming a train wreck. Don't blame her.

I think it's fair to assume by her "**** this night!" status with said picture of the no tip receipt that she was stiffed and stiffed hard. But that's like, my opinion man.
