I tried out a new restaurant and had really bad service. Don't plan to go back even tho food was decent. Am I doing it right?

I usually don't go back anyplace if the food is just decent, but I have like a billion restaurants on my list of places to try.

Giving the place another shot is fine though. Really bad service could've just been variance.

It's been said before ITT but if you truly experience awful service you should speak to the manager about it.

So I should ask the waiter to speak to the manager?

Yeah? What's wrong with just stiffing.

The behaviour isn't corrected that way, the server most likely just thinks you're the dick.

Right but it's a pretty big headache to speak to the manager in places with ****ty service. Those aren't the type of places where the manager is out on the floor, making rounds to the tables, or easily available. So you either need to flag down your awful waiter who probably isn't easy to get either given you are about to complain about the service or you need to grab another employee.

Stiffing is by far the easiest thing to do. If enough people do it he'll quit or get fired

I'm doing the moving thing this Sunday. Company is sending 3 people @ $95 /hour and a $100 truck fee. Going from 3rd floor apartment to single story home. We don't have a lot of stuff, and we are boxing everything ourselves. The movers will be padding/wrapping furniture and disassembling and reassembling furniture/beds.

I am planning on providing gatorade/water and pizza for lunch. How much should I tip per guy?

Edit: herp derp just searched the thread. looks like $20-$40 pp depending on their hustle.

if u provide food and drinks i dont think a tip is necessary

if u dont provide the food/drinks id say tip $60 (20/man)

if they are really cool and do a great job and maybe help u put stuff back together or break it down to pack up and u provide food and drinks then id still tip 20/man on top of that

if they are a$$holes and dont do a good job, dont tip and dont provide food/drinks and dont converse with them, just tell them what to do and what goes where

How much do movers make/hour?

I think it $95/hr for 3 guys so slightly over $30/hr per guy

I'd guess movers make $15/hr +tips, $20 too high

I moved furniture for four years during college. Where do you live?

The average mover makes $9-$12 an hour depending on the state (union states make more, obv). They don't make $30 an hour even if that's what the company charges you. Definitely have plenty of water and gatorade for them, and pizza for lunch is good. Unless you're in NYC or something, most people don't tip movers, so they'll be grateful for anything. I think $20 a man sounds about right, assuming they're careful and not *******s and not milking the clock, but anything from $15-$50 is acceptable (depending on where you live and your income).

Be sure to give the tip to each individual man. Don't give it all to the driver and ask him to disperse it. The guys may not ever get it. Even if the guys are back in the truck, insist the driver get them out and give it to them individually.

Also, if the guys are dicks, break tons of stuff, or milk the clock, don't feel bad about giving them no tip.

Glad to see you said most don't tip movers, I wouldn't either. Probably would get them drinks and maybe lunch.

I tip delivery guys like that with larger items like refrigerators, beds and washing machines. I'll throw them a 20 and say lunch is on me and iirc they were more pleasantly surprised than expectant so they probably run pretty low on tips. They have to earn the tip though. If they suck or are just a mope I say thanks, later.

I would also probably tip movers 20 a head, but again only if good. Movers and moving companies are a known scumbag business though, so there's a good chance you're already getting scammed in some fashion be it milking clock or trying to run an end-game scam.

I am aware of milking the clock a lot and if we had a ton of stuff I might be worried about that. I did ask the guy on the phone what they like to eat for lunch so they should go in knowing in that I'm probably going to take care of them better than 90% of people out there, which hopefully results in better service.

I worked as a mover in Dallas. I'd say I got a tip once a week--at most. Probably only got tipped once for every 7-8 jobs. We would always check the dispatch schedule for the day to see where people were coming from. Anyone from the Northeast, especially NYC, we fought like hell to get on those jobs. People from NYC always tipped a minimum $50 per man and that was 15 years ago.

I used a moving company for the first time last year. I've always done it myself before. I paid each man $20 on the loading end and then $20 for each man on the crew that unloaded it cross country.

A friend of mine posted this on facebook last night. Chaos ensued. Over 100 comments with references to slave labor, concentration camps, the right to tip (or not), right to chose your job, people bitching about their jobs, etc etc

My question is... if this was a big party over 6 (or whatever), how come gratuity was not automatcally included on this check? Pretty insane if it somehow is the case that the restaurant doesn't have a gratuity policy for big parties (assuming this check came from a large party)

Your friend has weird 9s.

Did he specify whether they tipped in cash or just didn't tip?

No tip period.

Maybe they "forgot"?
