Min,

I think in general the more clubby/trendy a place is, the more likely they are to just full on try to **** people over with things like that.

Yeah Miami is by far the worst I've seen in USA#1 for autograts.

Lol @ they called the restaurant to make sure she's tipped and she gets fired instead. How diff is it to call and say, "Oh, our assistant picked up our food last night and didn't know we wanted to tip on the takeout. I'd like for you to run the card for __."

She should be fired, but lol @ giving the church back $735 of money they conned out of other people.

Outback have a strict no bitching about clients policy online. She violated it. The policy is likely silly but obviously there for a reason.

Idiots making minimum wage are a dime a dozen. Churches who give regular business have value.

There are discussions here all the time about tipping on take out.

Think everyone acted reasonably enough.

Big difference between not tipping on a single $15 takeout meal that’s quickly packaged and a $750 one that’s basically a catering order.

Assuming the church isn’t lying about their intention of calling (which they easily could be - and should have refused the refund), then only Outback is wrong here. Not tipping on a $750 takeout order is scummy.

I've seen outback and restaurants like these auto-gratuity parties of 4+. If that wasn't a part of the billing then shame on outback for screwing their own staff over. I worked in the restaurant industry for years in my early 20s. Golden rule was always, the bigger the group the worse the tip. Almost Everytime.

This.

The whole situation could have been avoided with an autograt on an order that big.

If Outback isn't going to make sure that gratuities are a part of the carry out system, they need to pay a full wage to whomever is putting those orders together.

But she shouldn't have bitched and her getting fired was the consequence of her violating company policy.

Anyone an ass**** like me? If there's 18% auto on the bill and I typically tip ~25% in that spot, then 18% is all you get.

It genuinely never would have occurred to me to tip on a takeout order from a place like Outback (unless someone did something exceptional). It makes sense after reading the story and seeing that a server's shift was spent preparing the order. I agree with the posters who said there should be an auto-gratuity or other catering fee on top to protect those who prepare it.

@LOL, no one is an ******* like you. You're your own unique brand of *******. But I agree with you on this issue: I rarely put more on top of an auto-gratuity. There'd have to be truly exceptional service for me to do so. I don't mind auto-gratuity because it almost always saves me money.

What boggles my mind is the lack of critical thinking skills of those who believe she actually spent all shift putting this order together it's ridiculous she probably spent like 20 minutes.

I dont understand why the whole order was refunded. doesnt seem like the church complained at all, all they did was make sure they tipped after being made aware that they didnt. some random volunteer who went to pick up the order probably assumed that it was included on such a large order.

person could probably leverage this into a gofundme and not have to work for months

The whole order was refunded because Outback's employee was badmouthing them, and Outback wanted to please such a good customer.

When you work as a server all you are guaranteed is minimum wage, anything beyond that is a gamble that good service will result in a much higher wage. Some days that doesn't work out, too bad, that's the gamble.

If you are looking for a guarantee then you need to find a job that pays a guaranteed X dollars, even though that guarantee will likely be less than what you make on average as a server.

Why do people care if some church accepted free money from some restaurant? I'm definitely not turning it down, though also don't really understand the offer.

What some folks may miss here is that churches are good business for restaurants. People love to go to a restaurant for lunch after morning services. Getting a whole church full of people angry at you is not good business for a local restaurant. It's not just about the catering opportunities.

Doesn't the church teach forgiveness?

Forgiveness comes after repentance. Outback repented, so the church is forgiving.

Neil,

Assuming the church was being truthful, they were calling to try and get the server a tip. No indication they were “angry” at all

The question was why would Outback refund the money, and that's clearly why. Doesn't matter why the church was calling. This is what you do to make it right by a good group of customers.
