I think I would feel rude not tipping them if it had been a good experience. Considering all the tipping going on in the US it seems strange they don't get tipped. What about massages?

Well how about you give it a go and provide this thread with a detailed trip report? Tipping

Yes you tip for a massage.

O/u amount of years on the tipping behaviors changing in the US so that servers dont need it to make minimum wage?

I agree with Rexx. For "personal" services, I tip based upon how happy I am, not how much they make pre-tipping. Housecleaners, movers, masseurs, hairstylists, etc, I'll still throw them a bonus if they do a great job, even if they work for themselves and set pretty high rates.

Plus, remember, your prostitute may have a pimp taking a significant part of her action. Tip generously if you are happy!

Yak,

When a universal living wage is established, tipping will end.

Yak,

Servers don't need tips to make minimum wage.

This is not in line with what I read in that servers/waiters thread springs1 was running around in. They said without tips some would not make minimum wage.

I think technically they are guaranteed minimum wage either through tips or trough their employer if they don't make enough in tips.

In many states there is a separate, lower, minimum wage generally paid by employers to tipped employees. But if the employee does not receive enough tips during the week or pay period, the employer is supposed to make up the difference to bring him up to the standard, higher minimum wage.

Yeah, which was exactly the point that was being made. Trying to invoke that right might very well get waiters fired (again, the waiters/servers argument).

And that's the real reason they want cash tips. It's not about taxes, it's about scamming the employer.

Yak,

At big corporate/chain establishments, they usually have that stuff all entered into the payment system, so tips are all tracked and if server low wage + tips doesn't equal standard minimum wage, they are automatically paid the difference.

At smaller places, very common for employers to try and screw over their employees and not pay them what is owed. They can also play lots of games with shifts to legally keep from having to pay out any extra, since the calculations are done on a weekly basis.

That doesn't mean they're right.

Rapini,

You're biased though, since you're always just looking for ways to rationalize stiffing/skimping on tips.

Even if that were true, what's the connection?

So he's just trolling? Good to know, I guess.

Rapini,

Not trolling at all. The tipping posts I remember from you revolve around rationalizing why you don't tip or tip less than others in various situations. So I think you're biased towards supporting positions that claim employees are getting plenty even without tipping.

You must be thinking of someone else. The only situation I can think of where I would tip significantly less than others is a bad beat jackpot. If I ever win one, I'll be tipping some multiple of what the dealer would have made during the time lost due to the payout process, depending on how good I think the dealer is. That's WAY under what most people would tip, but it's what I'd feel good about tipping. Other than that, I'm a pretty standard tipper.

I've also never advocated a position that tipped employees are getting plenty without tipping.

Even if I were a cheapskate/stiff though, I still have no idea how that connects with whether or not a server would get fired for demanding minimum wage. (In case you're thinking otherwise, I think that people should get what they bargain for, which in this instance would be at least minimum wage.) A server would have no problem getting whatever he/she is due via litigation if he/she isn't getting paid. There's even been a thread on it in OOT.

Rapini,

Hmm, perhaps I have you confused with someone else. If so, sorry about that.

I thought you were the person who had tipping policies like not tipping delivery drivers if there's a delivery fee.

Recently moved to New Jersey. Oddly, all gas pumps are full serve. Suppose you get $20 cash in gas. Do you tip the attendant, and how much? What if it's the same old guy (70's) most of the time?
Thank you oot

NHL,

I recently asked that question re: Oregon, and the answer from people there was no they don't tip.

What kind of hourly rate would the attendant be on?
