Anytime El D and Rapini agree on a tipping scenario, the thing they are agreeing on is clearly correct and there's not really any other valid argument.

The latter.

I tend to tip larger percentages at low end places, like iHop or Waffle House. Just went to a local breakfast place and left $20 on a bill of $11.30.

Besides, it is generous, given how horribly overpriced LV strip food is. $32 probably got him a chicken entree and some potstickers. I would have left $5.
You're exactly right.

I actually like PF Chang's, but I think it's overpriced.

That is normal. Making up for others.

Last time I used a Groupon was at a pizza joint that I knew had taken quite a few groupons in the past month and normally staff has to work harder for smaller tips during this time(maybe they make it up on volume?)

I asked the waitress ahead of time in a fun sort of way
"You arent going to give me worse service for using this are you?"

She replied
"So long as you tip on full amount"

Okay fair enough, service was probably better once we got that out the way.

Why does that apply to happy hour but not this?

My point is that things cost different amounts, and it’s not the patron’s responsibility to worry about how/why the restaurant is pricing something. You order stuff at whatever price they charge and tip on it. I consider it different when the patron uses something to reduce the price of their bill.
You're giving too much attention to the "same effort" comment; that's more along the lines of "tip prices should be fixed" (not really a bad idea, imo), and probably a discussion for a different 3K post thread.

The point was that you think the tip on a discounted bill should be different based on the reason you're getting the discount, which doesn't make sense to me.

It is a fundamental difference in price reduction though.

Say crab is in season and there is a bumper crop, so the restaurant gets it at a great price for a few weeks. They lower the price of the entree accordingly in order to get more people to order it.
By your logic, you should tip based on the old, more expensive price.

Guy,

Yeah, it’s different imo if the restaurant says “everyone gets stuff at this price now” vs someone using something individual to them.

Edit: what cs3 said

I don't understand why you would say something douchey and passive aggressive like that. There is no way a server would want to give you better service after saying that.

I think your point would have been better taken if you'd have recognized that it didn't necessarily have to be douchey/passive aggressive in order to be a bad idea. The important point is there's no upside to saying what he said.

Nah, I took it as someone on the spectrum attempting to flirt with the server.

apple - Not really. BtM is basically DoctorZangief but without any of DZ's redeeming qualities and zero chance of improvement.

magking - she didn't think it was funny. She thought it was douchey. Which it was. She has to pretend to think it's funny because her income is dependent on not irritating you. krunic's is not, which is why he is able to be honest with you and instruct you not to behave that way.

+1 on ED & Rapini's explanation of patron reductions vs establishment reductions in price and how to tip accordingly.

+1 on cs3's note about ED & Rapini agreeing on tipping = it's probably right, except expand that to everything, not just tipping.

I’m at approximately 100% for the cabbie asking me where I’m going immediately after the dude closes the door. That guy is pretty much the only person in Vegas I don’t tip.

Taxi drivers usually confirm the destination.

The reason why the doorman asks your destination is to try to get half the kickback from the drivers for destinations that give kickbacks. "I can get you a free limo" or "let me see if I can get you a free cab ride" is how you can tell this is happening.

If you treat your cabbie decently, you can have half that kickback yourself.

Even if he successfully tells the cabbie where I'm going he's still useless.I can tell the cabbie myself in 2 seconds and I'll never tip that guy.Either way imhabe to tell one person where Im going.I dont need a middle man to do it for me and i surr as hell dont need to waste my money on him.He has in no way made my ride easier or more enjoyable and actually makes it worse by existing.A coat in August in Vegas has more value than that guy.

The doorman is the worst.
It is more effort to pull out a dolllar to tip than it is to open a door.l

Maybe if that sum beech did a backppack dance would I tip!!!

ps i did tip doorman in new orleans cuz was big mofo

My pet peeve is the guy in fancy restrooms who tears off a paper towel then hands it to you. I would rather they not have someone in there staring at me while I take a leak. At least the door openers and taxi hailers don't actually provide negative value like this guy does.
