I buy all of my K-Cup coffee pods from Marshalls/Ross. They're usually heavily discounted, and have a great variety of the brick & mortar brand coffees. They're usually $2.99-5.99 for the 12-16 counts boxes where in my local grocery store $6.99-9.99 for the 10-12 count Starbucks & Peets brands. At the rate, my GF and I go through them, it's a no brainer for savings.

A thread about THRIFTING - buying used stuff for cheap, through various sources? Interesting, and has great possibilities for entertaining stories.

A thread about discount retail stores that sell new items? Boring, and has NOTHING TO DO WITH THRIFTING.

Get it back on track, people!

I used to make a couple hours trip around the valley and hit up the dozen or so pawn shops once a week. I’d buy guitars and music equipment from these guys because they didn’t know what they had. The internet, for all of its goodness ruined that.

And, there was the one incident that I spent an hour with a detective in the interview room at the police station. I sold a guitar that turned out to be stolen. Took a bit to produce the receipt. To the pawn shop’s credit, they gave me my money back even though I don’t think they were obligated to do. I don’t know.

There is nothing more depressing than cleaning out the house of a dead relative whose hobby was "thrifting".

Yeah, I don’t buy the “sad little hipsters are so poor, they have to buy things from a thrift store because they can’t afford anything else” story. They buy vintage clothing from thrift stores because that’s the trend, not because they’re forced to.

Maybe the trend got started because Johnny Hipster needed new threads and only has $100 until next paycheck. Where's the cheapest place for "new" clothes?

I dunno.... Maybe they're all Macklemore fans and are still riding the 2012 wave until this day. A 6 year trend in today's fashion culture is quite a feat.

you are lucky. last time i went my gf spent 30 minutes picking out one sweatshirt. i had browsed the store twice over and instantly regretted asking her to come look at x and y because that was more aisles she wanted to look through.

big +1 to location for good will etc. went to look in the one here and made it about 5 feet before the overall smell convinced me id never want anything inside of it

LOL @ posters who don't shop at thrift stores inventing reasons they think other people might.

I think the current thrifting trend has a little to do with being good to the environment; not financing the cycle of producing more stuff that ends up in a landfill.

I generally look for some furniture on craigslist. You can find pretty good stuff for an affordable price. I go to used book stores for books and Good Will for some appliances/dishes.

Wait, people actually call this "thrifting"? Giving it a name like it's an actual thing? That's worse than "backpacking" meaning you are traveling with only a small bag.

We would shop at Goodwill a few times a year as youngsters.
Mostly my mom picked up small appliances and household stuff that needed replacing like toasters, lamps, coffee table and such.

Buying someone else clothes was a big NO way
and much to my chagrin as an avid reader she
would not allow us to buy used books.

I mean supposedly they washed all the clothes but
them books gotta be filthy as hell and how you gonna
clean paper, we did go to the library a lot so maybe
that had something to do with my many allergies

Used to thrift shop with my mom and still occasionally go. Sometimes you find something really weird/sweet but most of the time meh.

I have however found garage sales to be absolute gold mines when it comes to used tools. Seriously dont think I will ever buy a new tool again.

We have both an ARC & a Goodwill within walking distance from my house. I like to wander through when I'm out and about.

I'm not out there looking for bargains to resell or anything though. I'll often come across a book/CD/DVD whatever that I wouldn't normally buy, but for a dollar it's worth a try...found some new (to me) music that way.

Haven't bought clothes except as Halloween props. In addition to the books etc, might be the kind of household junk that's not worth spending full price for.

For example, butter dish got broken a while back, found one for cheap.

I have a cousin who used to buy clothes from Goodwill and the like. Best dress mother****er you ever met, dude looked like a model. Now he's a lawyer so I'm sure he's upped his game but dude used to be an antiques dealer in Manhattan rocking the suits and such from the poor stores. Always made me feel like I was ****ing up not shopping at Goodwill.... then I walk in there and it's gonna take a year to find 1 thing that I might wear lol.

I'm not sure I have ever seen a thrift store. I drop off stuff to SA every now and then, but it's not a store. Why not just go to these "dollar" places (Dollar Tree?) ?
