Thinking about buying a hybrid... Thinking about buying a hybrid...

As gas prices continue to rise, I'm sure more people are thinking about buying hybrids.

I'm open to hearing any advice or opinions about current hybrids on the market.

I finally found one aesthetically pleasing enough to buy.

The Fisker Karma:

According to Fisker, if charged properly, the hybrid would need to use no more than a fuel tank per year, quite a claim!
WOW!

I was in the market for a car and then gas went over $3.50 a gallon with no end in sight and I decided **** that. Now Im thinking of getting a used hybrid, anyone have any tips for looking for used hybrids? I know what to look for in a regular car but a hybrid is one thing Im not farmiliar with, Ive never even looked under the hood of a hybrid.

Was recently looking at used hybrids and have learned a little. They all have 8-year warranties on the hybrid components. The batteries last for a long, long, time, their life is not much of a concern. The Toyota Prius over the last couple of years has held its value so well that the savings on a 2 year-old used one is really negligible - there are stories of people selling used hybrids for more than MSRP because demand is so high and supply so low. The various GM hybrids aren't really hybrids and only get like 2 mpg more than a regular engine, it's basically a marketing gimmick.

Hybrids are generally not worth it unless you HAVE to have a new car, because buying a used Honda Civic for like, 5 grand plus the two thousand or whatever it costs for you for gas is going to be a better value until hybrids drop to like the 20k range.

I would say it depends quite a bit on your driving conditions. For example, if you do alot of stop and go driving, I would not recommend any honda hybrids. I own two of them and the MPGs drop tremendously when you have to stop every 20 feet due to the engine staying on. A prius would be much better since the engine could stay off. If thats not the case, a honda civic hybrid might be the best buy. They're not as trendy as the prius so you can probably get a better price. Also, they look more like normal cars.

There are also a ton of SUV hybrids out there. The new ford escape hybrid has gotten some really rave reviews.

edit: wrt the tesla, let's be real. If you buy one today, you won't be driving it for close to two years since they have that big of a back order. Cool car though

They really need to start pumping more of these suckers out so I can buy one for $10k or so. I havent even looked at prices for a used one yet but after reading this thread Im guessing that they are not in my price range.

Economy isn't a good reason to get a hybrid, you're better off getting a regular small car like a civic or something.

Ya prolly I just wish Willie Nelson would open a few cooking oil stations so that I could just convert an old Mercedes deisel and run it on vegie oil and look like a baller doing it. Plus those suckers last up to 1 million miles.

I have an '07 Honda Civic Hybrid and I love it. Over the last year with mostly highway driving at ~75mph and I'm getting 42mpg.

I got a $2000 tax credit for buying it last year, but I think those are done now.

If you pre-order it now you might get one in late 2010.

I recently got a Prius and like it, but I'm not looking for a race car.

It's considerably bigger than the standard (slightly) less expensive cars that get good very good mileage like the corolla or civic that people tend to compare it to. I got the Prius for $21k and while the corolla lists for $13k or something, they didn't actually have one at the dealer for <$18k.

As far as used ones go, the dealer said they had a used one that sold for $10k more than new because it had the carpool lane sticker.

I was waiting for the GM Volt to come out, but they kept delaying it.

Not that hard to do, if you live in the right area. Near SF, lots of people run biodiesel/biofuel vehicles with no problems/no filling stations.
