Saying "chinky" is definitely racist, but you can't be blamed for your parents teaching you bad pronunciation.
Did you mean "chintzy"? That means cheaply made. Can't imagine that was the word his parents were meaning to use about a Chinese restaurant though.

Dave, I believe that OFA is not from USA#1.

Chintzy is a completely different word, coming from a cheap fabric that used to be used for curtains, I believe, though I'm not certain of it's etymology.

I thought for the longest time that Tommy Tutone was some random guy, not the name of the band

No, I meant chinchy, not chintzy.

Chinchy means cheap and miserly.

Chintzy means (now days) cheap and gaudy.

OFA said "fast food," not "Chinese food." If they only meant Chinese food, then yeah...

And having discussed it with some brits, "chinky" is apparently a take-off on "chippy," which is a term for a fast-food fish and chips chop. "Chinky" is definitely derived from slang terms for orientals, and is a bit racist.

The weird thing I got out of this story is that your roommates in college watched you poop.

LOL at pointing out that "chinky" is racist, but in the same sentence calling Asians "orientals"

Huh. I have never heard that as a racist term. Seems to be taking the notion of "Orientalism" a bit far, imo. Maybe a bit old-fashioned, but racist? It doesn't seem in any way derogatory to me. Not saying that you're wrong, but it seems more Euro-centric than racist.

Still, no idea why I chose to use that word, maybe I had Edward Said on the brain at the time.

I think the differentiation is that Oriental is used to describe objects, not people. Thus, calling people of Asia "Oriental" dehumanizes them.

I guess that means we need to change the name of either the pastry or the people from Denmark.

I didn't mean that it was blatantly racist or derogatory. Just a bit... short of pc?
Anyway I got a good chuckle out of it

Screw all of the PC people.

Say what you want and don't let people tell you what you can or can't say.

Was on a bowling team with three friends years ago, they were Chinese and named the team "The Orient Express". Good times.

My brother's hockey team is mostly chinese players with a few caucasians. They have long been, and still are, called "Yellow Fever".

Taking Spanish classes all through high school and college and then running into somebody who just smiles and nods at me, but doesn't realize I am asking a question. My spanish is ****, which is my fault, but I am almost certain I used proper language. It shouldn't piss me off because a lot of money was spent for me to learn the language.

Having kids is good for this thread, because there are a lot of things you internalize as a kid, never think about for a couple decades, and then revisit. The latest for me is finding out that the song is "London Bridge is falling down" instead of "London bridges falling down." They'd be pronounced the same, and the former would make more sense, but I always heard it as the latter.
