If you are going to say it, it isn't "I could care less"...it is, "I couldn't care less". Get it right.
Actually, this should actually go into the thread, "things people smugly point out even though they're wrong".

It can be seen as a contraction of "I guess it's possible that I could care less about that", or it could just be sarcastic like "I should be so lucky". Trying to apply logic to idioms like this is a recipe for failure - words strung together into phrases often convey a meaning different to the logical interpretation of the words individually.

Besides language is something that evolves though different uses, and if people use "I could care less" to mean that they don't care, and there isn't ambiguity in it's meaning, then that IS what it means. OMG flammable and inflammable mean the same thing.

And even if everything I just wrote was nonsense, at the very least this belongs in "common knowledge way too many people are proud to know" thread.

The Americans’ primary objective was not Canada, though that was one of their objectives after the war started. Their primary objective was to ensure international respect for their own sovereignty, at least that is the current consensus among historians. Mainly they wanted the British to stop the impressments of their American sailors into the British navy (think Billy Budd). Probably their second objective was to get British troops out of American territory. Under the Treaty of Paris of 1783, the current American Midwest was recognized by both parties as American, but the British never evacuated their troops. After the War of 1812, the British never again did an impressments of Americans into the British navy, and they withdrew all troops from American territory. Many scholars refer to the War of 1812 as the Second War of Independence, because they argue that the American Revolution may have won de jure sovereignty but it was the War of 1812 that won de facto sovereignty. So the idea that somehow the U.S. “lost” the war is simply wrong.

Also, the war was a huge boost to American confidence and culture because of the Battle of New Orleans, which oddly enough happened after the peace treaty had already been signed. While it didn’t have an impact on the war outcome itself, it was very significant to American self-perception and the way the rest of the world viewed it.
Yep..the title of this thread is Things You Assume Everyone Knows About, But Apparently Don't....and most people think that the Yanks won (if you are American) and the Brits/Canucks won (if you are Canadian)

I posted a standard rebuttal a Canadian would make if he was responding to a Yank...and Shinola jumped at the bait.

You see what I did there?

This version isn't the one I knew and kinda sucks imo. We sang it with much more feeling with a fantastic beginning...Alllllaaaaaa....BAMA, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas...etc.

Yea wow this version really blows. My version's ending was brilliant, there was like a slow build "West Virgina, Wis-con-sin.........wyOOOOOMIIIIINNNGGGGGGGGGGGG".

Edit: And there was more after that.

Yeah this version is not great. It's the same lyrics (for the states anyway), but the singing is sort of lame. Much gayer than what I was taught. We also had verses: "When I was small I studied US Geography...." and then you'd sing it double time after the initial run.

This thread is a travesty.

The only saving grace is the verizon link. Props.

That Pink Floyd of The Wall fame was a four man band, not a lone musician.

That the names of the songs are Rock & Roll and Last Child, not Been A Long Time & Home Sweet Home (yes, I'm old, but all three of these were rampant even back in the day).

Of course, I used to like a song called You Don't Have To Go, or maybe it's called Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh, so there you are.

Not once during any of the 39 episodes of the Original Star Trek series did Captain James T. Kirk say "Beam me up Scotty". Any Sci Fi nerd knows that.

Yes, I would say or write it that way, in any context in which it was not apparent that the people involved were predominantly or exclusively female -- unless I had a specific audience in mind and was particularly, unusually concerned about someone's reaction. No, I do not think it is sexist, I think it is how the language works.

what if it was musical chairs and there were only 2 people left?

edit: to me when I hear "returned to his seat" it sounds like everyone is trying to get into some poor guy's seat.

I would assume most people know on a multi-lane freeway that the left lane is for folks who drive faster and the right lane is for the slower drivers but experience has shown that to be far from common knowledge

I knew her as an SBB girl but didn't learn her last name for years - all their SBB girl pics are now dominated by that body type.
