Saying football doesn't need an offside rule because basketball manages fine is like saying desserts don't need added sugar because spinach is fine without it.

With a couple of very tall guys at each end surrounding the opposing goalkeeper and repeated attempts to get the ball to them it becomes a very boring and predictable game to watch because there is no longer the richness of attacking possibilities eg the through ball that beats the offside trap.

Unlike basketball, scoring in soccer is hard. This means the punishment for cherry-picking is low while the reward can be high. You would have to defend the cherry-picker and as a result most players would end up in front of the goals with the only play being to kick it in front and hope for a deflection. This would be a bad game.

Recreational hockey certainly imposes the offsides rule. It is 100% fine in hockey and in soccer.

Again, focus your soccer improvement arguments on stopping people from writhing around in pain every time two people bump into each other and you've made a far bigger improvement than by resizing the goal or tinkering with offsides.

Just enforce a rule that if you writhe around in agony and play stops, you are taken off the field for 5 minutes for your own safety. Problem solved. And no, this isn't a South American and Italian thing. It is every league in the world. Google fake soccer injury compilation for the lulz.

Area code still a thing. I had to ditch my 702 number after I came to law school because people randomly recognized it's from Vegas and instantly marked me as a degen.

This is objectively wrong.

You must play very low-level soccer and hockey. The only pick-up soccer games I've played that didn't use the offside rules were fun games in which half the people playing couldn't dribble without tripping over the ball.

Also offside isn't necessary in basketball since everyone has to defend or it's too easy to score; you just penalize yourself if you leave someone in the front court while the rest of your team defends. In soccer this is not the case.

Doesn't happen much at all here (Scotland). We aren't exactly at the top of the game though!

Completely in agreement that it should be stopped, problem is in Brazil for example they see it as part of the game. FIFA would only piss off that many countries if there was a financial advantage to do so. Even within the top leagues there are different cultures and would need all of them on board for UEFA to step in.

Didace, Carnivore seems to have a lot of trouble understanding this basic concept so I thought it prudent to spell out the basketball side of the equation.

If that's the song I'm thinking about,I never cared for it ,until Joe Walsh did it on tour with the Eagles

Rearranging it and somehow making it enjoyable to me.

And for some reason,it pisses me off it wasn't good in his original band

A lot of adult soccer leagues I've played in don't use offsides (though often 8v8 or 9v9 on smaller fields). It can be annoying as many teams will use a goal hanger to basically frustrate the goalie and clean up rebounds.

Recreational hockey does not use offsides, wtf are you people talking about? It's also played with a tennis ball, and played width-wise on the rink since the goalie doesn't wear pad and there's no line changes.

I just don't see what's wrong with this.

Yeah to the tune of $40B/year profit center for the banking industry.

Because 16-year-olds should know better than to naively assume their bank just wouldn't cover the pack of gum - rather than cover it and charge them $37 for the "convenience". And insist that there's no way to turn off this "convenience". Nor is there anyway to not charge the biggest charges first to create more overdrafts. Oh what do you know - they found a way when slapped around by the govt after it bailed them out.

Not to mention people who have money problems and get in trouble due to predatory banking strategies like this.

Personally I'd rather the money stay in the hands of the idiots then go to a 3rd vacation home for some banking exec. Broke idiots is a recipe for disaster - leads to stuff like the rise of Trump.

I remember once in like 2004 I just started a job and was totally broke. I bought two or three sodas throughout the day at work and then some larger purchase that I knew would put me in overdraft. It sucked but I'd eat the 35 bucks or whatever and be ok.

Little did I knew they'd clear the buff charge first so I'd get hit with 3 overdraft charges. And of course they also charge a daily 35 dollar free for having a negative balance. Those 3 cokes ended up costing me something like 200 bucks.

Punishing people who use their card three times in a day for a single soda is fine with me. It shouldn't piss me off that people use a card for a bunch of $1 dollar purchases, but it does.

I use my credit card for everything. Cash back baby.

You guys were using debit cards right? Can i ask why? They seem to be worse than credit cards in every way?

How in every way? I recently got a Quicksilver card so now I use that for everything, but before when I had cards with no rewards, how would that be preferable to a debit card?

Why yes, yes they should.

No, no they shouldn't. No 16-year-old is going to realize their bank is basically laying a trap to get $37 out of them. And they should at least be able to tell the bank to just reject the sale.

I'm assume you're also a big fan of payday lenders as another tax on stupid people?
