Uhh there are lots of Canadians, especially the west coast ones, that you would not be able tell if they were from Canada or somewhere in the west coast of the states. And they don't usually like being mistaken for Americans!
Sounds like you should just ask "where in the states are you from?' but then you also run the risk of them being Canadian. And I've met a lot of Canadians that I was almost positive were American by the way they talk.
But yes, for most cases you are right, hence why I posted in this thread.
