Read the book Bad Pharma by Ben Goldacre. He goes into alot of detail about studies showing how generosity from pharma companies influences doctors. It's a damn good book.

Also, just FYI, when an American asks how you're doing they actually don't want to know. You just say "great" and move on regardless of wether you just won the lottery or your mom died. If you actually want to throw someone off respond with something like "average".

I figured that but its kind of the wrong way to start a conversation when you are being dishonest right from the start, i mean when someone asks you that with a grin on their face and you know that they dont wan to know just feels ****ty unless they are trying to sell you a car or smth.. I have a question; Is it the same question and does it entail more real interest when they ask you "How are you doing"? instead of a casual whats up which i know just means hi. Personally i hate these types of questions when some kind of answer is needed , i mean to whats up its perfectly normal to answer hey what up and move on, how are you doing or whats good kind of makes you give some kind of reply unless you just disregard it as such and move on , which i find painful and too much work.

^^this sounds kind of stupid since we have these types of questions and casual answers in my language too, but i guess in foreign language its a bit more complicated.

Perfectly normal to find this weird imo, some companies here (Scotland) are forcing their employees to do the whole fake-happy American greeting thing, really unsettling no matter how many times you hear it.

Depending on the level of fake-happy the correct response is eye-roll/glare/sigh and back away slowly.

If your mom asks you how you're doing in a really sincere tone, there's a slight chance she's actually interested in how you're doing. Anyone else and they don't give a ****. They're just saying hi, and if you actually give them an honest answer, they're going to start walking the other way when they see you to avoid another awkward interaction.

HAHA exactly, personally i try to stay with ; hey, whats up, what up, sup, hows it going, hey hows it going. they all mean "hi" i think. Even hey how you doing or just how you doing will depend on how you say it, if its casual like hey what up its fine, but if its followed up with a stare and god no a smile its disturbing to me personally since i know its not sincere but at the same time demands answer which also has to be insincere and its too much work.

Alternately you could say, I'd be a lot better if it weren't for this crazy weather we're having.
