Coasting when you see that the light is red is just good driving, but only up to a certain point. A half mile is way beyond that point. At 45 mph, that'd be 40 seconds of coasting. There's a very good chance that light is going to change well before you get there, and slowing down that early can also be dangerous since you're disrupting the normal flow of traffic.
I'm not sure what the cut-off point is, it depends on the speed of traffic, the specific stoplight's cycle time, etc. I'd guess it's closer to 1/8 mile, but I haven't thought about it too much.
