The two period thing is irritating to see on TV newscasts. Producers should know better. But then again, they're routinely dealt a difficult hand in general because their supers are often done using all caps. While it may be artsy, its just wrong and leads to awkward looking phrases. For example, in the same newscast, I saw prisoner of war abbreviated as POW. But since the rest of the phrase was all caps, it doesn't stand out, and just looks like the word pow.
