Federal Bureau of Investigation. Sometimes I see it abbreviated as FBI. That's fine. F.B.I. is okay I guess. But what drives people to use F.B.I as the abbreviation? This morning I saw P.O.W on the "Today" show. What's up with that? Where's the third period? I see this all the time. Does anybody who does this want to make the argument that F.B.I or P.O.W is the right way to do it?

Both are wrong and indefensible, but I prefer FBI and POW. Adding the periods is nonsensical, imo. Where does it stop? It just looks dumb: N.C.A.A, N.F.L.

(btw, the part that's indefensible is putting a period on only two of the three initials.)

The two period thing is irritating to see on TV newscasts. Producers should know better. But then again, they're routinely dealt a difficult hand in general because their supers are often done using all caps. While it may be artsy, its just wrong and leads to awkward looking phrases. For example, in the same newscast, I saw prisoner of war abbreviated as POW. But since the rest of the phrase was all caps, it doesn't stand out, and just looks like the word pow.

check it out at 2:25 and 3:00 and they've fixed it at 4:35. Meantime, since they're using all caps, POW doesn't stand out, and just looks like the word pow. Don't get me started on that.
