People who post stuff like "notsureifserious.gif." If you can't express your thoughts in complete sentences, don't lecture others on grammar (or anything else).

Ha ha, that wasn't clear to me at all. Maybe you should learn to communicate clearly before you go all post-modernist-unreal-abstract-conditional-gender- neutral on us.

I don't get the obsession with re-hosting pix, either. What's the big deal?

To get this thread back on track (pun intended): People on the train who stand up for their exit and crowd in front of the door before the train stops. They give you more than enough time to stand up and exit the train after it has come to a complete stop. I never stand up before the train stops and yet I have always been able to get off the train in plenty of time.

AFAIK, two main reasons:

1. If you hot-link an image, the site that hosts the image has to support the bandwidth. 2p2 is a big forum and the site where you found the image might not be able to support that bandwidth (everytime someone views the thread, that image is downloaded). In that case, the image will no longer show up. By re-hosting, you're shifting the load over to a website that can support much more bandwidth.

2. If you don't re-host, the original site can change that image at anytime. So "www.whatever.com/image1.jpg" might be the image you want at the time you hot-link, but the site then might change it to something else, like horse-porn, and now you're banned for linking horse-porn. By re-hosting, you ensure that the image won't change.

There's also other minor reasons to do it. For example, if you hotlink a Facebook picture, the privacy settings might be such that others won't be able to see it. Or some people (like me) use an extension that prevents FB from tracking the pages I go to, and that prevents FB pictures from showing up anywhere but Facebook.

I'm really intrigued. Can you point out such a post of mine? I'm a grammar nit, so I doubt you'll find much...

1, not an issue anymore.

2, never happens, the name of the file will change if the image changes.

Why would anyone hotlink a FB pic?

Still could be an issue. (Mainly for small sites with bad hosting contracts.)

I can change an image without changing the name of the file. But may that's a super-power I have and should keep quite about.

I kinda do that, I have it tiimed and get up 10 seconds before it gets to the stop. on that same arena, people that just stand on the left side of the stairwell. I know some are not from the area. but it still irks me.

You can, but no one ever does.

I've never linked to a FB picture, except if someone else has already re-hosted it for humourous purposes. I will re-host other images if I want to hide info about it, or make sure it doesn't go away. Otherwise I don't see the point.

I should be more careful before dragging people's reputations through the mud like that. I checked again and they were all you quoting other people.

I've seen a lot of pictures on these forums that just say "please do not hotlink photos" etc...

Ha, someone on a forum I used to frequent did EXACTLY this. He had horses, so had a lot of pictures of them hosted on his website. One month he notes a huge spike in traffic coming from a specific website, eating tons of his bandwidth. He checks it out, and it's a site for some equestrian farm that sells rides, training, etc, and they were hotlinking all his pictures and claiming they were from their farm. He replaced them all with some nasty nasty horse porn, posted the link so we could all see it on their site. It was up for at least 3 or 4 DAYS before they took it down.

People who insist on backing into parking spots. Pretty sure I already posted that, but it bothers me on a daily basis.
