Totally this. Last thing I want is some random beer guzzler hosing me down.

People who hide in the stalls usually do so even where there are plenty of urinals with plenty of room between users.

It's usually small, quiet guys with low confidence afaict. You never see a large confident type guy walk in to a bathroom and bypass a bunch of urinals to go piss in a damn stall. I could be wrong.

I'd use the urinal if there was space. Not if I'm right next to someone and there's a seat free (not that I sit).

Of course, that can all change when you're drunk and don't give a ****.

In fact, at that stage, this is how we roll in Scotland...

Yes it should, and it's not really a fine point in many circles. You might keep that in mind in formal situations.

Yeah well I guess I'll stay clear of these formal circles, they seem to be douchebag infested. I'm pretty sure I speak English just fine.

Dude I wouldn't even say it is a formal structure. Even junkies from Scotland would use some contracted form of if + past perfect.

Just to make sure we're talking about the same thing. "If I would have eaten all the sushi I ordered last night, I'd probably be sick today." This is dead wrong and anyone who would say that lacks basic familiarity with the English language?

Yes, it is dead wrong; your second statement is obviously hyperbole, but many people hearing "if I would have" will note the error.

Yeah I guess it makes more sense to do this in bars, I'm guilty of that too

I was just thinking of an office setting when there's only one other person In the restroom, with urinal walls.

People who come up with bogus tenses like "past unreal conditional." Generally these are ESL teachers who are not qualified to do anything else.

Could you explain your thoughts further?

Sorry, the "lacks basic familiarity with the English language" part was more aimed at Diego than you, since you never said anything like that. Your position seems to be that this is a rule of formal English, and I'm not disputing that. I wasn't aware of it, but whatever. I don't know and honestly I just don't care about the grammatical details of formal English. But Diego's position is that knowledge of this rule is a prerequisite for competence in English, and I think that's ridiculous.

You make me mad.

In fact, your position on this makes it ridiculous for you to ever criticise anyone for would of.

****in god damnit it isnt formal English. Just stop talking about English.

I got upset at atakdog because one of his posts struck me as condescending, but I can at least understand what his position is. But you're putting "would of" on the same level as a lack of knowledge of this past unreal conditional thing or whatever it's called, and that doesn't even make me mad, it makes me laugh. You're a ridiculous grammar nit and don't worry, I won't talk about English with you.

honestly wtf? It's got nothing at all to do with being a grammar nit. I hardly ever point out grammar errors so I doubt I count as being a nit.

this 'past unreal condition thing' is a common structure in English that a child could correctly use before hitting primary school.

The fact that you don't know the terminology makes absolutely no difference to the point of the discussion. I had no ****in clue what a conditional structure or present perfect or blah ****in blah until I had to learn grammar concepts. I still instinctively knew how to use them though.

The examples given are all just sentences using auxiliary verbs (would, had) with the past tense. There is no need to come up with a term for it; that's something ESL teachers do to make themselves seem important. They pull this BS all the time and it pisses me off. I don't know how anyone ever learns English from them.

NEVER! EVER! USE WOULD + THE PAST TENSE

All of the rest of your post is as equally ridiculous as your complete failure to define the form of 'the examples given'.
