If the crazies are right then it was a vast one in which loads of government types conspired to set the whole thing up. In the much much much much more likely scenario where they're wrong, 19 hijackers and a ****load of other Al Qaeda dudes were in on it.

Also, even if you use a weird definition of conspiracy that involves something other than people conspiring to do something, there is obviously a conspiracy theory, whether it's correct or not.

That rant reminded me of something: the use of troop to denote a single member of the military. It's been going on at least since the start of the Iraq war and it still bugs the hell out of me. It's bad enough when it's plural "5 troops died in Iraq today" but it pisses me off every time they tell me that one troop died or was injured.

What? Why? Troop is short for trooper. I imagine that would annoy someone that served as a paratrooper, but I always read it as meaning a member of the Army. So, it annoys me when it was a Marine killed or injured and troop is used, and double so when Marine isn't capitalized, but I think its an accepted reference to a soldier.

For my part, people that religiously follow TV shows mystify me. But I guess that's their business and I don't find it annoying. However, when they TiVo, DVR, whatever said shows, I think they're idiots and need to discover the wonderful world of books.

This is the first I've heard of that. It is certainly an accepted reference to a soldier, though it annoys me none the less. I have always thought troop meant troop instead of being short for something. From Webster:

I think it's much more likely that it came from turning expressions like "I support the troops" which make some sense, into a singular, which makes none. Even if it is short for paratrooper it is dumb to shorten to a word that has a different meaning that could possibly make sense. Why would they not say soldier and instead say a word that means a group of soldiers?

I don't understand how you can actually get annoyed by some of the things in this thread.

Take the TV example; sure they may be wasting time, but you are wasting energy and getting yourself into a bad mood over something that doesn't have any impact on your life.

Yeah, a lot of the things that people do are pretty weird and seem quite stupid/ pointless to me as well, but letting these things have an impact on your mood is crazy. Just let it go and worry about what you do with your own life.

Speaking of drive-through in general, how come the intercom is always a POS? I can barely hear what the person is saying with all the static and distortion.
It must be annoying for the employees as well. Fast food chains should spend a little more money on the intercom.
