You can't just have ******s and geniuses. Most people are in between, and sound like your typical students.

I'm probably in the "math brain" category but I can assure you I'm not a math genius*. I can also assure you I destroy most average people in math cognition, and have to work much less hard on it. You seem to think my kind don't exist. My dad is the same, though I think his dad and brother are closer to math genius level. My mom and 3 siblings are all atrocious at math. And I doubt I worked much harder at it.

*I've taken classes with kids I would call math geniuses, so I've seen them up close and know my limitations. You can also peruse 2p2 and find people way smarter at math. These are who I would call the geniuses. A typical person might look at me and think I'm one but they don't know any better. I do, and would assure them I am not.

So if you guys had to read off an equation like (a*b*c)/(d*e*f) you will say "multiplied by" 4 times?

They're talking about the verb in the following sense:

Instead of saying "You need to times this by 7" you should say "you need to multiply this by 7".

Reading those equations out loud, saying "times" is standard*. But in the case above, the first sentence sounds like it was spoken by a 9 year old. See the difference?

*Because it literally means "that many (A) times, this (B)" or "this (B), that many (A) times".

Five, seven times is 35. But we say "Five times seven".

I agree that most students are "in between." I'm simply saying that those students CAN learn basic math.

Because math builds on itself working a little bit harder over a series of classes will lead to a large gap in apparent mathematical ability. As I've said before "I don't have a math brain" is almost always code for "I don't understand the prerequisite knowledge for this class".

Also a large part of how hard one works comes down to motivation. The fact that people are allowed to believe the "I don't have a math brain" theory kills motivation, for obvious reasons.

If the "I just don't have a math brain" theory were true then a math tutor would be completely unable to help a struggling student who "doesn't have a math brain". But math tutors are able to help struggling students with math by helping them work really hard at it.

I know someone who teaches languages (via the "Where are my Keys?" game) and he gets similarly frustrated when people say "I'm not good at languages." I'm just saying that having this attitude makes the statement a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The likely reason they don't have the prerequisite knowledge is that math is too hard for them, or not interesting enough to want to work hard at it. In either case, there is a lack of a "math brain".

People with a math brain tend to like math because they are good at it and it's fun to help your classmates. So I think they enjoy working at math to see how high they can get. Others hate it because all it does is remind them that their brain isn't very strong in that area, and it's a very important area in life. Gotta be depressing for most people.

I watched a video the other day (I think posted in a physics thread , was to do with multiverse) and everything about it was weird annoying (was american documentary) . Prob so unusual therefore annoying.

sure not everyone can, but when you take out the small portion of the population that has a learning disability or is otherwise severely mentally limited they can. At least 80% of the population is capable of making an A or B in all math classes up to some level between precalc and non-linear algebra. The exact cutoff is something that I dont know, but proably towards the lower end where it is more tangible. The fact of the matter is that most people dont care enough to put in the time and effort to learn it and are not given the resources in terms of educational material and teachers that it would require. However, it doesnt exactly take a genius to learn calculus. I know plenty of people who are nowhere near genius level nor do they have a "math brain" that can do calculus simply because they worked at it.

I tutored math for 6 years and the kids who lagged the most were simply ones who didnt care enough. My toughest task was simply finding the proper incentive system and after that it was easy. I tutored a 4th grader who literally couldn't add without counting it out on his fingers or using a prop to count things into piles when we started. I worked with him for 2 years for 2.5 hours a week and he scored in the 92nd percentile on the state administered math test in 5th grade. He pretty obviously didnt have a "math brain" or whatever, but he was able to learn it with ease once he actually put a little effort into it.

Pre-calculus is senior level math and yeah some people can't do it. Certainly not at the pace that is required to keep up with their peers.

Far, far cry from pre-calculus. So he struggled with long-division and now he's awesome at it. Wow. I don't think these are the kids Kristy is tutoring.

the kids who cant do precalc arent exactly ones that are knocking the teacher's door to get help or doing extra problems. also, precalc is not sr level math.

people "cant do it" because they spend their time cutting class and getting high. that doesnt mean they are physically incapable of learning concepts

and lol at a school where pre calc is senior level math. maybe a one room schoolhouse in hickville alabama.

Meh, I suppose it may be possible or even fairly common for people to be naturally inept at math at the pre-calc level. I can't picture it, but really how TF could I?

On the other hand, I never met anyone in such a class who did every problem in the book yet hadn't mastered the subject. Cause or effect, yatta yatta yatta.

That's my school, yo. Well, multiple rooms at least. Also, pre-calc was the MAXIMUM offered by my high school.

good to see you guys skip over the links I post and instead share some more anecdotes and assumptions.

Here's another:

Finding Math Hard? Blame Your Right Parietal Lobe

Math is harder for some people to learn. Because it's harder for them to learn they're less interested in learning it. Most everyone might be capable of reaching a level of competence in math but it will be much harder for some people. You're not being lazy if you fail to learn math when learning math for you takes 3x as much effort than it does for your peers.
