Math is hard, and anyone born lucky enough to have it come easy to them is exactly that: lucky.

This guy disagrees.

Same argument can be made for Will Ferrell

But I like the clang sounds you get off a double rim

One thing I remembered I hate while playing today: when people call pocket pairs "pockets." Example, someone checkraises on a low flop, the other guy goes into the tank, "do you have pockets?"

No, what you're calling a 'Math brain' is really just genius. Of course geniuses are going to make it look easy, and people coming in with the expectation that, if they don't perform at some super-human level, they are justified in quitting drive me nuts. For everyone but outliers math is simply a lot of work, take courses and be prepared for a couple of hours of homework each night-- which you can't fake the way you might write a b.s. paper in an English class.

You wouldn't take a masonry program and not expect to lug rocks; don't take a math class without anticipating the mental equivalent.

I hope by that you mean that it is scary that the hundreds of kids that come in are not prepared to take their own education seriously enough to not look for an excuse to quit and demand special treatment.

I see your point. Rephrase: 95% of the college-accepted. The bottom of the barrel might really have to sweat for a C, but they CAN get there.

I think almost everyone can learn up to some level of math, but assuming people who are having trouble learning are lazy and not trying is a mistake imo.

Ive never tutored math but Ive tutored Spanish and some people's brains are just better equipped to learn a foreign language. I assume it's the same with math.

Nobody said "assuming". Their work ethic is pretty evident if you're tutoring them. People have been taught that being bad at math is normal and it is ok to throw in the towel.

Also, the connections are what the tutors are there for. You should hear my distributive property/pimp and ho lesson for athletes and the PSEO kids.

If this is your definition of "math brain" then most people do not have a "math brain", as most people are not geniuses, so I'm right. Your students are also likely then right if they claim not to have a math brain (or be a genius).

I don't get it. You're mad when people correctly claim they aren't a genius, and you are also mad that they just don't work hard enough to attain genius-level output? lol

There are certainly people who are neither geniuses, nor hard workers, though. But you can be a hard worker and still suck at math. Lou Ferrigno always gives 110% and I bet you he sucks at math.

Whenever I pay cash for a transaction, I always try to minimize the change I get back. If I don't have exact change, I just do what ever will give me back the least amount of change. I am decently quick at math, also keep in mind this is Canada and we have both $1 and $2 coins.

So if I pay for something and the total is $14.61, and I don't have exact change, i'll give the cashier something like $20.11, meaning I'll get back $5.50. This always seems to confuse people for some reason, even though all they have to do is punch it into their till and have it do the math for them. It bothers me that it confuses them, it also bothers me that someone that makes transactions like this all day can't make these calculations in their heads.

Small side bar, whenever I go out to eat and have to leave a tip and am paying either Debit or Credit, I always tip the change to the nearest dollar on top of whatever I'm leaving. So if the total was $31.14 I'd tip something like $5.86 or w/e. I could see this bothering some servers (let's not make this a tipping thread, I just made up a fake example).

I just thought of another.

One of my first jobs was working at McDonalds. Every now and then someone working the till would type in that the customer paid with say a $100 bill rather then $10 by putting in an extra 0. They would always catch themselves and give the correct change, but they would be worried that their float would be out b/c they don't understand simple math.

yeah trying to make it easier always just makes it take longer

its so infuriating. ive made peace with nobody being able to make proper change so i always pay with a card unless i can pay the exact cash amount. but they often **** that up too by pressing the wrong button or something.

still, what i was originally alluding to is the stupidity of other customers. their stupidity costs me 5x as much time as the admittedly ******ed employees.

I have a fraternal twin sister. When I mention "twin sister" to somebody, you wouldn't believe how often they say, "You have a twin sister? Really? Identical?"

My pat answer is, "Wouldn't it suck for a girl to look exactly like me?"

Scientists have actually found that on average, everyone has a 82.4% chance of there being someone of the opposite gender, somewhere in the world, that looks exactly like them. Not just similar--nearly exact. That 82.4% varies depending on ethnicity, though. For more common ethnicities it's closer to 90%, and for more obscure ones it's closer to 60%.

Assuming this is not a level (couldn't we tell the difference between a male and a female with a high degree of accuracy even if all we got were head shots with shaved heads and natural eyebrows?), I don't think this study is what most people have in mind when they ask me if I have an identical twin of the other gender.

This is ridiculous. I presume that you have not taken mandatory college-level math or the prep courses for it, otherwise you would understand why it is absurd to think that the capable brain for this is "genius level".
