I totally disagree with the anti-voicemail sentiment. If an unknown/blocked number or mild acquaintance calls me, I never answer my phone. I listen to their message and call them back when I'm able, knowing what they want, and I'm never put on the spot.

Business-related voicemails are fine generally I would say

Personal-related are unnecessary except for a very small fraction of the time

Pisses me off when someone leaves me a work-related voicemail, and asks me to call them back, and when I do, they've taken this advice

There are also plenty of times where I've made a call and left a voicemail because I'm going to be unreachable for the next few hours or more.

Voicemails can be purposeful. When my close friend's father was about to pass, his mom reached out to my dad to help her save a recording of his voice that she happened to have on her phone.

I know what you mean. When my friend's father passed away all he was left with was a pocket dialed message...or so we thought. Near the end he realized he had pocket dialed and left him a touching message that he still keeps with him to this day.
