Incorrect use of idioms. "Begs the question" is a particularly big offender. I completely understand why people think it means the same thing as "raises the question" but it still annoys me.

has anyone other than paul phillips ever used 'begs the question' correctly?

Very good. I do think it's often justifiable to be pissed off, though, because it's often used incorrectly in a haughty manner.

For the self scan users.....Most of the errors you get are probably weight errors. This is because you need to scan the item then place it in the bagging "area", wherever the bags are located. The bagging area is also a scale and the weight needs to match the scanned item.

If you scan an item then throw it back in your cart, it ain't gonna fly. This is done to prevent theft. The weight on the bagging scale needs to match the weight of the item scanned. If it doesn't , then the light flashes and you need the cashier to clear the error.

Theme of the thread is 'stuff that pisses you off that should NOT piss you off'.. not..

'Pet peeves that probably bother other people..'

The original title is more enjoyable because it gives people an opportunity to share their own foibles.

I'd be surprised if this hasn't been mentioned before but...

"Can I get?" instead of "may I have?" (even "can I have?" would be fine)

does my effing head in.

I understand that Americans use "Can I get?" all the time but I hold my fellow Britons to a higher standard. "Can I get?" or "I'll get" is wrong. "May I have?" is the correct phrase but "Can I have?" is tolerable.

It all stems from the Americanised culture inflicted on us through garbage like "Friends" coupled with plain old willful ignorance.

As far as I'm aware, I've never heard it used correctly, and just had to Google it to find out what it really meant. This goes right up there with "intensive purposes" as grammar I was ****ing up without knowing it.

I think you meant to type "begging the question".

IIRC from age 17 or whever we learned this, begging the question is when a person passively states a "fact" that probably isn't actually a fact, and they are using it as a premise for their argument.

"Because dune buggies are safer than Toyota Camrys, we decided to save $18,000 and opt for the dune buggy. I have small kids, you know."

They are "begging the question" with the "fact" that dune buggies are safer than Camrys. At least that's what I remember.

I don't have a huge problem with someone over using "begs the question" b/c I don't know what else they would say in those cases they use it. For instance "Doug has to work today but he will be able to pick us up when we're done at the park." "that begs the question, what time does Doug get off work?"

I don't have any problem with that. But if they say "you are begging the question" then I have a problem with that since that is a phrase that means something else.

Thank you.

I'd even go a step further and expand this to people who wear their caps backwards. You're not a baseball catcher, so turn that **** around.

The commercial before the movie starts at amc where that orange troll tells to be quiet and we all have more fun at the movies. I don't know why that pisses me off, but it's just so awkward commercial.

"I seen that before."

"I done that yesterday."

Or any variation of those.

I live in the south so I hear these everyday.

Whenever I hear it I want to peel the flesh off the person's body who said it. It's even worse when an educated person says it.

One that bugs the hell out of me.

Well where I grew up everybody said "intensive purposes." It blew my mind when I was corrected on this forum, and realized it was wrong.

3) Insert card into machine. Wait 2-3s for next step to come up.

6) Enter pin number.
7) Wait for slow ass machine to contact bank, get approval, confirm transaction (minimum 5-15 seconds).
8) Retrieve card + shopping.

That's a good 30-45 seconds or so. Quite a bit longer than:

1) Get total.
2) Give cash that was ready in your hand.
3) Retrieve change + shopping.
Waiting an extra 30 seconds to get out of the store just to sit on your ass eating Cheetos and watching a **** movie is a burden?

People who use cheques to pay when there is any other feasible option.

I don't care how fast they are or how pre-filled out the cheque actually is to make the transaction faster...it still irritates me that people choose them over cash/credit/debit.
