They always ask you what you want, and then before they type it in, they have to ask if it is for here or to go. After this happened a few times, I started my order by stating "for here". Wait a second or two to let it sink in, then place my order. A majority of the time after I place my order, they ask me "for here or to go". And I politely repeat myself. They were so stuck in their habit that they just couldn't not do it this way.

A bit later they started asking it before they would ask for the order, and things were right with the world again.

Granted, they were ESL, but they had a better grasp of the language than I do on Spanish.
it would probably have made more sense to say "for here" at the end of your order so it would be an actual sentence :P

No it doesn't. It takes a typical cashier about 8 minutes to count and retrieve 42 cents in coins. And coins are dirty, filthy, nasty, disgusting items that ****ing make noise in your pocket. **** COINS.

Also why spend cash if you don't have to? Cash is still a valuable utility as sometimes you basically need it for certain things. I might have $50 in cash in my wallet for a couple weeks straight. I still want to have it though in case I need it.

On the self checkout subject. When I go grocery shopping with my wife, it is usually for our weekly groceries, so we get a decent amount of stuff and always go through a cashier. But it seems that they have severely cut back on their staff and I almost always end up bagging it myself while my wife is paying. I don't think I am pissed off at this, just an observation. I prefer doing it myself because it is obviously quicker than waiting for the cashier to finish ringing everything and then bagging it themselves. But the thing that pisses me off is after I self bagged the groceries because they didn't have a bagger, they still ask "do you need help out with?". akdfjqkl;fjskl;askl;djfal;jk

You can't provide someone to bag my groceries, where is this magical person who is going to help two able bodied twenty year olds who just bagged their own groceries to bring them out to the car for us.

One of the reasons why Wegmans is the nuts. Cashier girl scans & bags all in one motion. I was astounded that it was such a time consuming mutli-step process when I was originally forced to get groceries elsewhere.

Where do you shop where cash is king? Aside from a sports stadium almost any modern store is better equipped to handle a credit card whether it's Wal Mart or Neiman Marcus.

I like how there will be 2 punk kids roaming around doing nothing then I start bagging my own groceries and one of them rushes over and is like "I got that for you man" I just keep bagging and he's like "Here, lemme get that for you sir" then I'll move and let him do his ****ing job.

Based on pictures I've seen of you, Tony, I've come to the conclusion you are obese and probably sweaty all the time.

Yeah- I'm not sure where Tony's shopping either. Not even saying he's wrong, just wondering.

Cash might still be faster depending on who you're dealing with- but most POS machines at this point are fast enough that the difference isn't worth crying about.

Not sure what it's like where some of you are, but I'm with Tony on this one. Debit card purchase for me (lol Canada etc) at typical 7-11 type places is:

1) Get total.
2) Tell them it's Debit/CC purchase, they have to push something to send it to card machine.
3) Insert card into machine. Wait 2-3s for next step to come up.
4) Confirm amount of purchase. Wait 2-3s for next step to come up.
4.5) Sometimes confirm Yes/No Cashback. Wait 2-3s for next step to come up.
5) Confirm checking account. Wait 2-3s for next step to come up.
6) Enter pin number.
7) Wait for slow ass machine to contact bank, get approval, confirm transaction (minimum 5-15 seconds).
8) Retrieve card + shopping.

That's a good 30-45 seconds or so. Quite a bit longer than:

1) Get total.
2) Give cash that was ready in your hand.
3) Retrieve change + shopping.

well at any place I go to here in the 21st century I either swipe the card myself or give it to them and they swipe it, wait about 2 seconds then 5 more for the receipt to print and Im gone.

RESPguy, that's how they all used to be but more and more places now have machines that are much faster for a few reasons.

-The computer itself is more powerful, processing information and going to the next step faster
-Signatures often aren't required for anything under ~$25
-No need to differentiate between credit/debit
-Don't need to tell the teller you're paying with a CC, just swipe it
-Receipt prints faster

So for me at most places now, the total pops up, I swipe the card myself (ready in my hand), hit "Okay" once or twice, grab the receipt and go. Some places require a signature but that only adds a few seconds.

Canadian living in the States. These two card payment systems (Interac vs. Credit Card originated Debit) are completely different animals.

Much faster in The States, both the system and the cashier using the system, since it is all the same Debit/Visa/MC etc.

It is truly amazing how fast I can pay with Debit-Visa here in MN and be on my way. They also don't seem to have/use the chips here, so it is always swipe and sign in one fluid, super-practiced, motion.

New Zealand and Australia seem pretty proud of their EFTpos culture... which is handy at the bar, while waiting to order, when the groups in front insist on paying by card, individually, in that it keeps me soberer.

Unless you're using a debit card to make absolutely sure you only spend money you have, using a debit card over a credit card is a total fish move. Credits cards are faster, offer rewards, and if there's a problem, your money is still in your bank account.

I used to check groceries and would always do stuff like this. Not intentionally, but you just have like a pre-programmed checklist of stuff to do every time, and even when you know the situation dictates that you deviate, it is really f'n hard to do. This is exacerbated by the fact that I was generally off in my head, not really paying attention. OTOH, I was the fastest damn cashier you have ever seen and wasn't much of a small talker (so pretty much dids ideal cashier). Anyway, the point is I would do stuff like ask people if they had coupons, when they put them on the belt and I had seen them. Ask them if they had a loyalty card when they had already handed it to me unbidden. We'd lol, and I'd get them quickly on their way, but yea I always felt dumb.

I also used to be a tour guide in a historic hotel in my hometown and it was the same thing. I learned the tour in order, so if someone was staying over in a room and wouldn't let us show it, it'd always **** up my order and I'd end up pointing out stuff that wasn't in the room we were in. In these situations, I'd just go with it unless questioned because one of my co-workers taught me that people didn't know **** and would just nod their head and move on silently even if you made no sense. He would routinely just make up **** for his own personal enjoyment on tours to see if people would even notice.

At my liquor store it would be a huge ****ing fish move to use my credit card, since I'd be charged 5% more than if I use cash or debit.

almost the exact opposite, but in canada they started charging 5 cents for every plastic bag as part of some sort of enviro-hippy movement. this shouldnt piss me off, because ive even found myself admiring the system, but it does. **** you. give me a bag. i get that the store isn't the one charging me or whatever, but i always feel like they should cover the nickel for me. all hell breaks loose if i ask for a bag AFTER ive paid, and sometimes i do this for the hell of it. the first month that this was a law i actively debated the issue with about 25 retail employees, but that wasnt as much fun as you think.
