Can you explain the physics behind this? Passing a lot of cars implies you're traveling faster than they are. It's my understanding that traveling faster does in fact get you places faster, but I only have a high school education.

Rate and time are inversely proportional. If the speed increases, the time must decrease.
I'm only speaking of the left lane and assuming the passed cars are driving near the speed limit. I was exaggerating, of course you save time, but it's negligible over reasonable distances, and not worth the headache of driving in the shape of a single helix, which most people are unable to do without being dolts.
Example: I keep a longer distance from the car in front of me than most drivers, but am still going the same speed, and this is view-able to the car behind me. Yet they tail me, then cut me off, only to be going the same speed as they were before.
If there's little traffic on the road it's fine. If there's moderate/heavy it's silly.
