Eating roast chicken out of a cup didn't work too well.

Sure, but that's personal preference, not more effort.

Oh wait, I thought he just meant that it would take a week or two until the dishwasher was full enough to run and so he preferred to do small batches by hand.

Re-reading it, it sounds like he thinks it actually takes more time to load and unload the dishwasher than to wash by hand, if the batches are small enough?

Yeah, I don't think so. And I do live with one other person and I do wash some stuff by hand because they aren't dishwasher safe, so it's not like I don't have experience with his side of it.

I'm single, live alone and I cook at home at least 4-5 nights per week.

I've used my dishwasher maybe 3 times in the last 5yrs. It would prob take me at least 7 days to fill up the dishwasher and since I hate the thought of dirty dishes(yes I rinse them off) fermenting in the dishwasher for a week I usually hand wash the dishes each night.

I would rather have the extra cabinet space instead of the dishwasher.

+1

Dishwasher are unnecessary. It's not hard to wash your dishes by hand.

wrt thread, I hate how in this country, people will frequently complain about somebody doing something and then when faced with that person, pretend to agree with them. I was paying for groceries with saved up coupons and change today, I was using a self-service and there was no one around so I wasn't hurting anyone. I heard two loudmouth mid-40s workers there complaining about me and being quite rude. I've been shopping there for 10 years and these ladies have worked for at least 5 so we know each other well. At the end of it I apologised if I caused any inconvenience and they were pretending to be supportive, understanding and empathetic, yet they were bitching about me 5 minutes before! It's a common practice here, in most other cultures and countries I've been to and lived in people are usually either brash and direct-whether they are speaking to you or about you-or they avoid complaining about people whatsoever, here it's the worst of both scenarios.
Why were they complaining if there was no line?

This guy put it better than I could, you could also do small batches but that's just inefficient and costly.

Because they're boring people with boring jobs and need something to do to fill the time?

Maybe you already do this, but you can store your clean dishes in the dishwasher to save on cabinet space.

If clean dishes are in the dishwasher, where do the dirty dishes go? Do they just sit in the sink and get moldy?

If there are dirty dishes, then that means space freed up in the cabinet. So you rotate them in.

People who open the dishwasher after the dishes are clean but don't empty the dishwasher. That turns off the indicator light and it's no longer obvious if those are clean dishes or not. Or if it's a dishwasher with a manual lock, where when it's locked that means the dishes are being / have been washed, this would take the form of opening the locked dishwasher, taking out a clean dish but leaving the others, then not locking the dishwasher again.

Someone will now complain about anal people but when there's a simple / obvious system available, flouting it pisses me off.

Spoiler:
And it should.

Can't you tell if the dishes are clean by whether they're clean?

L O ****ing L. call me after you're settled down and have 2-3 kids. We do 5+ full loads through the dishwasher each week.

I have a dirty dish to put in the dishwasher. If the indicator light is on or the latch is locked, I know at a glance or by trying and failing to open the dishwasher that I can't do that without emptying the dishwasher first. Otherwise I have to open the dishwasher and either put the dirty dish in without checking because I assume those aren't clean dishes, or I have to inspect the dishes already in there. PITA and totally avoidable if everyone follows a simple protocol (especially if the dishwasher has a manual latch, not so much with just the indicator light that goes off as soon as you open the dishwasher with no way to turn it on again).

My family never used one when I was growing up. Two kids and two parents.

We did just fine. It was never an issue.

Protip: Do them immediately after use. This way there's no buildup.

If you live alone, or with just one other person, you could keep all the dishes in the dishwasher. Just flip the dirty one's around or move them to the other side of the dishwasher. If your household only has one or two people, you don't need that many dishes.

Agree that smaller households don't need a dishwasher, but I live in a place with 4 people, and my GF likes to make dinner frequently which causes multiple pots/pans to need washed. We run a full load 2-3+ times a week.
