Fun fact, the official term for sticking a word in the middle of a compound word is tmesis. By far the most common use of it is cursing ("un-****ing-believable", "fan-****ing-tastic" etc.) but you also have the above, and phrases like "put that thing any-old-place".
As for regionality, I'm on the east coast and I've heard "a whole 'nother" for a long time.
