I guess you need to estimate the chances that the bidder behind you uses the +1 strategy. The more likely he is to +1 you the less it matters what you do.

its more like the more likely he is to use +1, the more thought you have to put into your move. if he's unlikely to use +1 your move is generally trivially easy.
