Arbitrary values in rules.

Went up to the store earlyish today before the heat turns on too much. Grabbed some beer. Not because I needed it, just while I was up.

Was told they can't sell beer before 8AM. Why 8? Why not 9, or 7 or 6:48? Why any restriction at all? How about cigarettes (or anything else that's bad for you), are they under time control?

Does me no harm, I'll go back later or tomorrow or something.

I did point out it was already past 8 in Cincinnati, where Kroger is headquartered, but they couldn't work with that.

Blue laws back in the day were the worst. Sunday replaced Monday as the worst day of the week. But I felt totally justified in being pissed off about not being able to buy beer--or much of anything else.

Yeah, the blue laws were finally changed here for liquor ~10-15 years ago.

Auto dealers still can't be open on Sunday. WTF?

My father was a city councilor for our small town for a while. IIRC, there was a law that the bars had to close on Christmas Day, and this was under debate.

From his perspective, that was a clear violation of the separation of church and state, and thus not legal. He didn't drink, so he didn't care personally.

I remember his explanation being something like, the government is implicitly preferring one religion over any others by forcing these places to close on Christmas. He couldn't support that law.

If we wanted to make a rule that said, "You must close your bar at least one full day during December," that would be fine. But not ok to specify a day with religious overtones.

Plus, being a software developer for 30+ years, I hate hard-coded ****.

i dont like lots of regs. but some make practical sense and are good.
closing on christmas eve early or at some time on christmas day makes sense as do we really want drunk parents around on days spent mostly with the kids.
not really a religious thing as most people celebrate i t as just a holiday unless they are religious.

Back in my college days everyone from high school would be home for the holidays and going out Christmas eve or Christmas night was great. Some suckers had to stay home to spend time with their families.

Or am I the chump for rather being with friends than family? Deep thoughts. Gotta get back into in person therapist ****.

Either way Wednesday before Thanksgiving or Friday Saturday after

Auto dealers don't want to be open Sunday. They are the ones that asked for that Sunday Closing law. If they were legally allowed to be open on Sunday, one or two would open, and any of the closed dealers would lose that potential business (or be forced to open). If they all are closed, they do not lose that potential.

Old man on the porch time…

When I was a kid, in a small town, nothing was open. You had better get gas the day before a thanksgiving or Christmas.

I clearly remember the first Christmas that a Chevron stayed open. My mom felt so bad for him, she made us take him food. Turns out, we were not the only ones to do so.

Called my eye doctor today, and asked them to email my info so I could get new glasses somewhere else.
They said "no, you have to come in and be rechecked to make sure everything is ok".
I said no, I'm a big boy and if anything has changed since I was there 8 months ago it would be my problem. After going to check with the doctor 3 times she finally agreed to send me the info. What a flamin' bunch of horseshit!!!

If you’re in the US, they can’t do that. You’re entitled to any and all medical records under HIPAA. I don’t know where you are or if that pertains to you or not but the fact that they even tried pulling that crap on you is worthy of filing a complaint.

Yeah, they're not supposed to but they'll often give you a bit of static before relenting.

Killing people solves a vast amount of problems; and the more people you kill the more problems are solved. Just food for thought. And that shouldn’t piss you off.

The issue here may be that she was checking to make sure it had been 8 months. It varies by state, but oftentimes an eyeglass prescription from over a year ago cannot be filled.

I can confirm the day before Thanksgiving is the best day of the year to go to the bars.

Dung sweeping after incompetent software engineers pisses me off, even though I am being paid for it, for example one software engineer had hard coded the dates that a system function should be switched off for the next year because he couldn’t work out how to use the “day of the week” function. He thought that after a year it would be someone else’s problem ; since he was fired six months later he was correct in this assumption.

At least you got a firing. I kept showing mgmt egerious examples of code that couldn't work, but "meh...".

Part of the reason for my lack of attendance now.

One contractor I worked with was so useless that after a short while everybody on site stopped asking him to do anything, so he spent his entire time on site playing solitaire.

He managed to shutdown the entire data logging system for the whole factory for two days, since it was a food production facility traceability is rather important.

When we were doing twenty four hour cover he covered the night shift. The first thing that I would do when I got in the morning was to remove any modifications that he had made and redo them properly.

“The hot water tank has just started to boil over, we can’t work out why”
“Could it have something to do with the modification that you have just made to the heating control loop?”

I informed my boss that he was completely useless, but they still rehired him for a different project, he managed to turn what should have been a six week commissioning process into an acrimonious 18 month long one.

He is not even the worst that I have worked with, that would be “Two Chickens” Barry.
